Rewiring Aotearoa Business and Institutions Survey Logo
  • Business & Institutions Energy Survey. Working to reduce energy bills & emissions for New Zealand businesses & institutions. Shows three watercolour images: one is a cafe shop front, another is a large truck on the road, and the third is a lecture theatre.
  • 🎉 Complete the survey and be in to win $3500 worth of prizes!

  • What's this survey about?

This survey is one of several studies we are doing to understand the energy needs of different sectors, as part of our national Machine Count project. For this survey, we focus on businesses (e.g. cafes, hotels, manufacturing facilities) and institutions (e.g. schools, universities, hospitals).

The resulting Machine Count database will be a public resource that helps businesses and communities explore the potential of electrification and its barriers.

    What information do I need?

Here's a list of information that might be handy to have on hand. You may wish to forward this survey to your energy/asset/facilities manager. Estimates are absolutely fine, all questions are optional, and you can save & continue later at any time.

    • total area of your buildings (m2)
    • approximate total bills for electricity, petrol, diesel, gas, LPG
    • on-site power generation from all sources (e.g. petrol, diesel, solar) in kW
    • total roof space with solar potential (m2)
    • the types of machines you use in your organisation, their quantity, and details like their power capacity, fuel type (e.g. petrol, diesel, electric), etc.

❗️ If your organisation has multiple sites, please complete one response per site.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes. It seeks a lot of information and we really appreciate however much you are able to complete.

    Who's running this?

Rewiring Aotearoa is a New Zealand charity working to electrify our future. Electrification - swapping fossil fuel machines for electric machines - can save New Zealand families & businesses money, decrease emissions, and improve resilience to always keep the lights on.

  • Consent

    a. Rewiring Aotearoa is committed to protecting your privacy, and data collected through this survey will comply with New Zealand privacy law and operates within Rewiring Aotearoa’s Terms of Use and Privacy and Information Policy.

    b. Survey data will be used to explore the potential of business and institution electrification, barriers to electrification, how organisations' energy resilience can be improved, and to speed up the transition to an ‘electrified’ future.

    c. Survey responses will be used in a public dataset after being processed and anonymised (meaning that all personally identifiable data will be removed, that is, emails, age, gender, and business name).

    d. Taking part in this study is voluntary (your choice) and you may withdraw from the study at any time.

    e. You have consented to our privacy policy.

  • General

  • Please submit one survey response for per site. I.e. If you have multiple locations around the country, please submit separate survey responses.

  • For the district, please select all that apply.

  • Fuel use

A general idea of your organisation's fuel use
  • Please identify the main energy sources for the following functions, if applicable.

👉 Example: Your site consists of 1 office and 1 factory. The office has 1 gas water heater and 2 heat pumps for keeping the place warm. The factory doesn't have heated water or a kitchen, but it uses an LPG heater to warm it up, and has a big coal boiler.

  • Energy bills

How much you spend on fuel and electricity to run all the machines on your site
  • Please fill out the following table with the approximate total cost of your energy bills for each fuel type. This is for all your machines combined (vehicles, heaters, cooking, generators, boilers, etc.).

If you don't use a particular fuel type, just leave blank or enter 0.

👉 Example: If you spend about $50 a week charging your EVs from public fast chargers, and $800 a month on power bills

  • Energy generation

Energy you currently generate on-site (not purchased from the grid)
  • ✍️ How to fill out:

    • Please list all the generators that you currently use to generate electricity from fuels, including ones that are owned, leased long-term or hired short-term by your organisation.
    • Enter the generator size using the two columns Generator size (number only) and Unit (kW, W, hp).
    • Approximations are absolutely fine.

👉 Example: A 10 kW petrol generator that you use for a few hours a year

  • Roof space

Gauging solar potential from total roof space across all buildings in your organisation
  • Vehicles

  • ✍️ How to fill out:

    • Please list all the vehicles that are owned, leased long-term or hired short-term by your organisation.
    • For multiple vehicles of the same type, use the Quantity column to avoid repeating answers.
    • All fields are optional, although the more you fill out, the more accurate our insights will be. Approximations are absolutely fine.

Please scroll to the right on the table below to fill out all the columns.

  • Other machines

Other energy-using equipment in your organisation
  • ✍️ How to fill out:

    • Answer the single-choice question below to tailor the section to your needs.
    • In the Machine type column, enter all large machines. Examples include:
      • gas cooktops
      • heat pumps, wood fires
      • hot water heaters, boiler
      • pumps, etc.
    • If there are multiple machines of the same type, you can use the Quantity column to avoid repeating answers.
    • For Weeks used per year and Hours used per day, e.g. if you use a machine 6 hours a day, for maybe a few months a year, please enter something like "12" for weeks ("a few months" roughly converted to weeks) and "6" for hours.
    • The Capacity per machine column is for entering the power rating of the machine, if known. Only enter a number, e.g. 6. The next column, Capacity units is where you can enter the units, e.g. kW.
    • If you know the total capacity for each machine type, but not the quantity of machines you can fill out the Total capacity and select "Don't know" in the Quantity column.
    • For machines that take multiple Fuel types, enter the main fuel type and add comments about other fuels in Usage notes.
    • Approximations are absolutely fine.

    ❌ Please do not include:

    • vehicles or generators (these are on the separate previous pages)
    • small appliances like toasters, kettles, lighting, etc.
    • machines owned by contractors
