    Letter of Inquiry Submission Form for First-Time Community Organization Applicants
  • The Dig In! Community Garden Grant and Assistance Program, implemented by City Green and funded by Passaic County Board of County Commissioners, aims to support the creation of vibrant community gardens, for the production and access to healthy food, neighborhood beautification and community enhancement. Through Dig In!, City Green will provide financial, technical and educational assistance to develop, build and support community gardens and neighborhood farms throughout Passaic County.

     ELIGIBILITY:

    This program supports community organizations, existing community gardens, faith-based organizations, municipal “adopt-a-lot” programs, high school garden clubs, green teams, youth-serving organizations, and community members looking to spearhead a public community garden project.

    All projects must be:

    • food-producing gardens
    • located in Passaic County
    • have a minimum of three adults committed to their project
    • have a site with at least 6 - 8 hours of sunlight, and a reliable water source.    

    Not Eligible: 

    • Schools (Pre-K - Middle School)
    • Commercial for-profit entities
    • Private Residences

    GRANT SCHEDULE:

    • Letter of Inquiry Submission Period: July 1st - September 25th, 2026
    • Site visit and application submission period: September 25th, 2026 - November 20th, 2026
    • Final Application deadline: December 11th, 2026
    • Grant award notification: Late January 2027
    • Grant delivery: March - May 2027
    • Grant report deadline: November 2027

  • In the Letter of Inquiry, please answer the following questions:

    1. Describe the individuals and group who would be spearheading your garden project.  How do you anticipate responsibility be shared in administering, maintaining and coordinating a garden?

    2. How would a community garden support your group's purpose and goals?  Who would the community garden serve?

    3. Provide a description of your proposed garden location.  Include information on the site's exposure to sunlight, water access, and relationship to existing buildings or landmarks,

    4. Highlight any existing funding sources, in-kind resources or garden expertise supporting this project.
