  • Purpose

The purpose of the Validus Energy Electrical Safe Workpractices Program is to define the minimum requirements to reduce exposure to electrical hazards.

The program is found on the Programs tab of Validus.Energy (https://validus.energy/programs)

    Qualified Workers

Only qualified employees are allowed to perform work on a Validus Energy worksite on equipment over 50 volts.

A qualified worker is one that has  demonstrated skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of electrical equipment and installations and has received safety training to identify the hazards and reduce the associated risk.

Qualified workers may be qualified for some tasks, but not others.

Potentially qualified workers must submit training and education to EHS to document qualified tasks prior to beginning work,

Prior to beginning work, the qualified employee shall assemble the appropriate tools and electrical PPE to complete the task.

If you are unsure of whether or not you are qualified.  You ARE NOT qualified.

If no Validus Energy employee is qualified to do the task, a qualified electrician shall be hired.

  • Bonding & Grounding

Bonded - joining of metallic parts to form an electrically conductive path that

    ensures electrical continuity.

Grounded - Connected (connecting) to ground or to a conductive body that extends the ground connection.

    Policies

Verify Bonding and grounding for portable generators, equipment, raceways, tanks, cable trays, and enclosures is in place and maintained.

Ensure a Bonding cable is attached prior to loading tank trucks or filling secondary containers with flammable material.

  • General Requirements

All portable tools must be UL rated and Grounded or double insulated.

Extension cords must have the grounding prong and insulation intact while in use.

Only ladders with non-conductive siderails shall be used around electrical components.

GFCIs are required when working in damp or wet locations.

Prior to doing any electrical work, employees are required to remove conductive articles of jewelry or clothing

    Energy Isolation
Prior to doing electrical work, if possible, de-energize the equipment.  Refer to the Validus Energy LOTO program found on the programs tab of Validus.Energy.

     Extension Cords

Extension cords are not to be used for extended periods of time. They must be inspected prior to use and discarded if the jacket is broken, ground prong is missing or another defect is noted.

Surge protectors and power strips are not rated as extension cords and shall not be connected in a series.

Extension cords shall be protected from damage.  Do not run through unprotected holes, doorways, or staple cords.

Extension cords should be secured or taped down whenever they cross a walkway.

    Circuit Breakers/Fuses

Do not bypass circuit breakers or fuses.

Overcurrent devices are not intended to be reset repeatedly.  In the event of multiple trips, seek assistance from a qualified electrician[DA3] .

Use fuse pullers to change fuses.

    Use/Labeling

Ensure that the equipment used is rated for the environment it will be installed in.

Do not remove manufacturer’s labels from equipment.

     Clearance

Do not park temporary equipment or store material underneath or within 15 feet of energized power lines.

If proper clearance cannot be maintained contact the power company to have lines jacketed.

Ensure 36 inches of clearance is maintained in front of electrical panels.
