  • Australia-listed Donaco International said VIP sales at its Aristotel International Casino Hotel in Vietnam rose 116% year-on-year in May. However, Aristotel reopened on May 18 as a 428-room five-star hotel, so the previous year's real estate performance doesn't compare similarly. It originally opened in 2002 as it was thought to be a boutique hotel.

The company said in a filing with the Australian Stock Exchange that sales among public market participants were down 13% compared with May 2013.

Donaco said Aristotel's overall sales rose 94% in May from a year ago. The company did not specify what it meant in cash.

Donaco said the number of visitors to its "gaming floor" has increased 41% year-on-year since its soft opening on May 18, adding that the new properties have attracted strong interest from players and junket operators.

"New junket operators have begun visiting properties in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Malaysia," it said in a filing on Thursday.

The property is located in the northern province of Laoquai, which borders China's Yunnan province. The casino can have up to 50 game tables. Forty tables are currently available, Donaco said.

Donaco says its gaming revenue comes mostly from VIP guests, mostly in mainland China.

The new property has been trading for six weeks, and the operator pointed out that it is not a "normal trading period."

Donaco said tensions between China and Vietnam over maritime claims did not stop Chinese VIP players from visiting their accommodation, but may have deterred some public market players, adding that the gaming business also had some negative impact because of the month-long 2014 FIFA World Cup, which began on June 12.
