Rider Age Divisions

-Riders must register in their age division (rider level-not horse level)

-All-Around points for cash prizes will be calculated in EACH AGE GROUP

-High Point Buckles will be awarded for each Age Division as well as the Two Year Old Jackpot

-Everyone is welcome to level up into Open Classes as they choose but Open Level Riders MAY NOT level down into other classes

-If you'd like to be considered for Open Division All Around you must register in enough Open classes to gain points

-You may only register in the Rookie Age Division if:

 1) You have entered our Horseshow less than twice (May enter and compete in our Rookie Division twice, rider not horse) (see bottom list)

2) If you are new or a beginner to horseshowing 

3) Youth (2) who age out of the age group who have only showed in our horseshow once, may enter Rookie once as well if new to horseshowing (see bottom list)

-Riders may only level up into the Open Division (Example-Riders who ride in Rookie Division cannot level up into Amateur Division only into Open Division)

-If leveling up into OPEN if you are in another age division (Youth 1 and 2, Rookie, or Amateur) please fill out SEPARATE entry forms for your leveling up and your regular age division

-Horseshow office reserves the right to move contestants into proper rider age divisions (after having discusssion with competitor) to keep things fair

 

Horse Age Divisions:

-Yearling Horses-Any horse under the age of 2 (Example: can be 6 months or 1 year 9 months)

-Two Year Old Horses-Must be age 2 (Can be entered into the Two Year Old Jackpot as well as Open Junior Horse Classes)

-Open Junior Horses-Ages 5 and under (can be age 2)

-Open Senior Horses-Ages 6 and over

Class Descriptions

Yearling and Two Year Old Halter-Inhand horses judged on balance, muscle, and conformation

Showmanship at Halter: Judges evaluate the grooming and fitting of the horse, and expertise of the exhibitor in presenting the horse. Each exhibitor is required to perform a pattern designed by the judge with emphasis on preciseness of pattern and degree of confidence exhibited by the showman

Ranch Horse Conformation-Inhand horses judged on balance, structural correctness, and form to function

Western Horsemanship-series of simple western maneuvers in a pattern

Ranch Riding-tests horse's ability to work at a forward, working speed while performing the required and optional maneuvers in a pattern. The required maneuvers are the walk, jog and lope (both directions), the extended trot and extended lope at least one direction as well as stops, back and one change of direction. The optional maneuvers are sidepass; turns of 360 degrees or more; change of lead (simple or flying); walk, jog or lope over poles or other reasonable maneuvers a ranch horse could perform

Working Western Rail-measures the ability of the horse to be a pleasure to ride and should reflect the versatility, attitude, and movement of a working horse. The horse should be well-broke, relaxed, quiet, soft and cadenced at all gaits. The movement of the working western rail horse should simulate a horse needing to cover long distances, softly and quietly. The overall manners and responsiveness of the horse and the horse’s quality of movement are the primary considerations with the ideal  natural head carriage at each gait. Horse is ridden on a relatively loose rein with light contact and without requiring undue restraint while being responsive to the rider and making timely transitions in a smooth and correct manner. The horse should be soft in the bridle, yield to contact and shall not be shown on a full drape of rein. Riders are encouraged to use adequate space given the extension of gaits required. This class should show the horse’s ability to work at a forward, working pace while under control by the rider. The horse shall be balanced and appear willing and a pleasure to ride in a group situation

Yearling InHand Trail and Two Year Old Trail-trail pattern with obstacles for inhand yearlings and for riding two year olds

Ranch Trail-modeled on the Versatility Ranch Horse ranch trail class, tests the ability to negotiate obstacles that might commonly be found on ranches. Maneuvers include riding over obstacles, opening and closing hinged gates, riding across bridges, backing, sidepasses and dragging objects

Reining-judges the horse on movements and mastery of a prescribed maneuver and attitude as he is guided through a pattern. The horse is required to perform a number of stops, spins, rollbacks, lead changes and circles at a lope. The horse should be willing to be guided with little or no resistance.

Egg and Spoon-riders carry an egg on a spoon while horseback at different gaits and challenges until the last rider has their egg left on their spoon

Barrels-race against the clock to follow a course consisting of three barrels in a triangular “cloverleaf” pattern. Riders choose to circle either the right or left barrel first, race to the opposite barrel and complete the course after circling the third barrel and racing down the center of the three barrels to stop the timer. Knocking over a barrel carries a five-second penalty.

-Egg and Spoon Classes will be held in the big arena at the same time Trail is going on in the small arena to help move things along for time.

-The Egg and Spoon Jackpot will take place after all Egg and Spoon are complete.

-Top 4 Places rewarded cash prizes

-60% Payout for each jackpot

-Jackpots will not be categorized by Age Groups but rather the best scores combined for horse/rider team for all those entered in jackpot

-Placings will be as such:

-Egg and Spoon Jackpot-Top 4 placing in class (Last 4 people left with their egg and spoon)

-Yearling Jackpot-Top 5 Placings in each class (First place=5 points, 5th place=1 point) added together

-Two Year Old Jackpot-Top 5 Placings in each class (First place=5 points, 5th place=1 point) added together

-Barrel Jackpot-Top 4 fastest times rolled over from the barrel classes (only first run counts so if you're entered in Youth (2) and Open, only your Youth (2) run counts)

-Western Jackpot-Highest top 4 Scores from each class added together for total score (Example-68 reining score plus 72 ranch trail score plus 71 ranch riding score = total score of 211 points)

-ND Heritage Jackpot-Only horses who were bred and born in North Dakota are eligible for this jackpot (any age of horse/rider). Added scores and placings (up to 10 placings-1st place=10 points, 10th place=1 point, etc) will be added together. Scores classes are Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, and Ranch Riding. Placing Classes are Halter, Egg & Spoon, and Barrels. (Example-5th place in Halter is 6 points plus 73 points in Showmanship, plus 2nd place in Egg and Spoon is 9 points, plus 68 points in Western Horsemanship, plus 71 points in Ranch Riding, plus 7th place in Barrels is 4 points=grand total of 231 points for this jackpot) (this Jackpot already has added money!)

-All Ages are welcome to enter jackpots

-Egg and Spoon Jackpot will be separate class to compete in

-Barrel Jackpot will take only first run (Example-Entered in Youth (1) Barrels and Open Barrels as well as the Barrel Jackpot, we will take the Youth (1) run for the Jackpot)

-Other jackpots will take your scores/times from the classes

-If entered in more than one class (example Rookie and Open) the higher score will be taken for the Jackpot

-Jackpots must have at least 4 entries to be put into effect

-MUST BE ENTERED IN CLASSES TO BE CONSIDERED FOR JACKPOT

-Yearling Classes are only eligible for the jackpot

-Two Year Old Classes are only eligible for the jackpot

NPS Ranch Horse Classic Rules 2026

-Riders may only participate in their age division, BUT all ages can level up into the Open Division (must fill out separate entry form)

-Riders must be in western dresscode for all classes except Egg and Spoon and Barrels (Long sleeve western shirt, Jeans, Western Boots, Cowboy Hat/Helmet)

-Casual Wear for Egg and Spoon and Barrels is up to rider's discrection

-Western AQHA Tack Rules apply for all classes

-Tie-Downs are allowed in timed events

-Any breed/registered/nonregistered horses are welcome

-Riders must particpate in their correct age divisions

-You may only register in the Rookie Age Division if:

1) You have entered our Horseshow less than twice (May enter and compete in our Rookie Division twice, rider not horse)

2) If you are new or a beginner to horseshowing 

3) Youth (2) who age out of the age group who have only showed in our horseshow once, may enter Rookie once as well if new to horseshowing

-Entry Fees must be paid BEFORE show start during morning pay window the day of

-Jackpot Entries will be taken by the office before the start of that first class in each Jackpot

-Payments will be taken in form of Cash, Check, Venmo, or Card (5% fee on card transactions)

-Payment will be taken the morning of the show at registration in case of weather, not enough signups or etc to force us to cancel the show

-If you registered but CANNOT attend the day of, please let us know as soon as you can that you will not be in attendance so we can rearrange our draws for the day.
