Producers are crucial for the smooth running of a documentary production, but for directors used to working alone, finding the right one can be an intimidating prospect. So how do a producer and a director work together on documentaries, and what should they be looking for in one another? Featuring a panel of top UK producers speaking from experience, and a case study of new feature documentary Grand Theft Hamlet with the producer and directors
Speakers include Nikki Parrott (Tigerlily Two), Laura Shacham (She Makes), Becca Wolff (Grasp The Nettle), Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls (Grand Theft Hamlet), Tolu Stedford (Story Compound), Christo Hird (Dartmouth Films) and Rebecca Mark Lawson (Tyke Films)
1:15 - 2:15 - Lunch break
2:15-3:30 - Artists, Documentary Making and Celluloid (75mins)
Many documentary makers started as moving image artists, and documentarists can often be as at home in the gallery as they are in the cinema. This is especially true when they're shooting on film, giving a richness to real life. In this session, we'll meet documentary makers, artists and exhibitors working with reality on celluloid
Speakers include Sapphire Goss (Filmmaker), Paul Daly (Filmmaker), Maria Palacios Cruz (Open City Docs), Dawn Bothwell (Berwick Film and Media Arts)
Hosted by Jo Nolan (Screen South)
3:30 - 5:00 - Funder and Exhibitor Plenary (90 mins)
Your chance to hear from documentary commissioning/funding, distribution and exhibition executives and ask them anything. Speakers include representatives from BFI Doc Society, Dogwoof, The Guardian, The Whickers, London Short Film Festival, Together Films, and Arts Council England
5:00 - 6:00 - Talent Mixer hosted by BFI Doc Society and Screen South (60mins)
Mix and match with your fellow filmmakers and creative storytellers working across the South East, meet new collaborators and chat with the speakers from the day
