Guidelines for Graduate and Undergraduate Step Show / Stroll Off/Exhibition Performance
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is an organization that was founded on the ideals and precepts of high scholastic, moral and ethical standards. It is our responsibility as members to uphold and display the positive image of our beloved sisterhood to the public at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, the way we present ourselves through step show/stroll performances and exhibitions of any kind. The image of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is important in as much as we are an organization that is more than a century old. We have weathered and survived many storms and we are still here! Our Founders' vision was to establish a sorority that would attract young women of high scholastic, moral and ethical standards that would abide by the rules and standards of the organization that have stood the test of time.
In alignment with the founding principles of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® the following are Step Show/Stroll and Exhibition Guidelines:
- ALL Step Show/Stroll and Exhibition Requests MUST be approved by the Regional Director.
- ALL Undergraduate Step Show/Stroll and Exhibition performances MUST be approved by the Graduate Advisor.
- ALL Attire worn for Step Show/Stroll Exhibition performances MUST be approved by the Graduate Advisor (undergraduate chapter) and Chapter Basileus.
- NO military or military type attire is to be worn to show respect for those who serve and have served in the military.
- NO prison or jail house attire is to be worn.
- NO X-Rated attire or content is to be used. NO attire that reveals any private parts of the body including "see through" material. Each team member shall be mindful of our requirement that they present themselves publicly in a way that represents the high moral and ethical character of an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. Each member is expected to wear appropriate attire. All clothing should be clean, properly fitting and in good repair and meets the following requirements:
- All undergarments (including briefs/boxers, thongs and sports bras) should be properly covered by outer clothing and should not be visible.
- Transparent or sheer clothing, low cut tops and very short skirts, shorts or dresses are inappropriate.
- Attire must not display obscene, profane, illegal, inappropriate or offensive images or words, including references to alcohol, tobacco drug usage or violence.
- NO drugs (illegal or legal), alcohol, and weapons or any such props are to be used in any performances. This includes pre-promotional short videos, flyers and advertisements.
- ALL shows must be void of foul language, lewd, indecent, and obscene behavior, nudity and/or stripping, sexually suggested gestures, dances and/or inappropriate music. This also excludes the inappropriate use of foods and/or fluids.
- NO Objects that could pose a physical danger to participants, performers or audience members may be used.
- ONLY active Alpha Kappa Alpha members of the chapter requesting permission to perform in the step show stroll and/or exhibition may participate if approved by the Regional Director and the Chapter Basileus (Graduate and Undergraduate).
- If a combined team of Undergraduate Sorors are to perform, ALL participants, attire, music and performances MUST be approved by Graduate Advisor(s) and Chapter Basileus and the proper forms must be submitted by each participant and chapter being combined.
- If a combined team of Graduate Sorors are to perform, ALL participants, attire, music and performances MUST be approved by the Chapter Basileus and the proper forms must be submitted by each participant and chapter being combined.
- Combined teams must be from the same region.
- NO tributes may be performed to any fraternities (this excludes greetings to fraternities and sororities made in a positive manner).
- NO derogatory remarks shall be made to other sororities and organizations.
- NO combined step shows shall be performed with members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and other organizations (i.e. other NPHC organizations, campus or community organizations, etc.) without express approval by the Regional Director.
- NO acts of violence or suggestive acts of violence shall be performed.
- NO profanity, including any word, expression, gesture or other behavior that is socially construed or interpreted as insulting, rude, vulgar or disrespectful.
- NO music and/or videos that are in poor taste or contain profanity or sexually explicit language or connotations.
- A Graduate Advisor or authorized Graduate Council Member MUST be in attendance at Undergraduate chapter performances.
Infractions of any of these guidelines could lead to serious consequences that could risk your membership in the sorority. Alpha Kappa Alpha will enforce a zero tolerance policy when it pertains to violations of these guidelines.
Furthermore, by affixing your signature to the Step Show/Stroll Off/Exhibition Performance documents, you agree to these conditions including adherence to the Soror Code of Ethics which states: "To present myself publicly in a way that reflects high moral and ethical character of Alpha Kappa Alpha women by:
- Obeying the law.
- Exercising good manners.
- Displaying concern for my appearance by following established Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® guidelines.
- Refraining from profanity, acts of violence and criminal conduct.
- Exhibiting respect for other Pan-Hellenic organizations by avoiding demeaning remarks or ridiculing them.
- Wearing identifiable paraphernalia only if conduct or circumstances will bring no negative repercussion to the Sorority.
