    • Where does the workshop take place?

      This year, the PSCW is hosted by Temple University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Temple University is just off of Broad Street in North Philadelphia, accessible by SEPTA Regional Rail lines, the Broad Street Line subway, and bus routes.

      Can I show up unregistered? 

      Yes. Please be advised that class registrations are sent out before the beginning of the workshop. If you show up unregistered, there is a chance that the classes you want will be full.

      We also require various Covid Safety precautions, so please read the following section if you choose not to register at this time.

      What is your Covid-19 policy? 

      We continue to monitor developing pandemic trends and precautions, but as of August 17th, 2024, we request and require masks to be worn indoors at the PSCW. We also request and require that all on-site personnel be vaccinated. We will have hand sanitizer available for all in attendance. Stage combat is a very active and close quarters art form and the safety of all participants is of the utmost importance. Thank you for your understanding.

      Should anything change with this policy, we will update our website, social media and directly contact registered students as quickly as possible. This may happen as late as the final day of the workshop. We will make sure to have extra masks, but please bring extras that are comfortable for you to wear in case you sweat through them.

      Do I need previous experience?

      No! Everybody of every skill level is welcome at the PSCW. There will be plenty of options for all levels of students, from those who have never studied stage combat before to Advanced Actor/Combatants.

      What’s the schedule like? 

      The day will begin with a 9:00AM (EST) warm-up and two class periods from 9:30-12, Lunch 12-1, and two more class periods from 1-5pm. We continue to monitor the possibility of conducting our traditional grand melee this year, so stay tuned for news on this. At the end of the second day, we will have a Q&A session with our instructors. 

      What’s the class schedule like?

      Each class period will see multiple different classes offered, in various disciples at various skill levels from basic to advanced. Each class will be 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. Classes may be designed for actors, choreographers, general knowledge, or purely for fun!

      Do I need to bring weapons?

      No. All tools for classes will be provided. If you would like to use personal weapons, they will need to be approved by the instructor for the class in which you would like to use them.

      Do you offer Skills Proficiency Renewals?

      For this historic, 25th anniversary year, we have decided to offer extra programming in lieu of SPRs on Friday. We hope to see you at SPRs next year, and please check out both world-class intensives below!

      Is there a minimum age? 

      We do allow students as young as 16 years old. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign off on the waiver and paperwork for this workshop and must at least be present for check in.

    • Friday Intensive #1 Info 

    • Dual Intensive:

      Rapier & Dagger AND Fighting for Film!

       

      The PSCW is thrilled to host UK Fight Director Kevin McCurdy for one of this year's all-day intensives on Friday, November 22nd!

      This course will cover:

      Spinning Steps with Rapier & Dagger

      When we're always taught, as students, Rapier & Dagger (or any companion weapon), I've found that a lot of it is linear and only because of particular movements, (eg Punta Reversa, Punta Mandritte, Volte), that we are then allowed to go "offline", but what's stopping us from "spinning"? I've found throughout the years that it's a natural movement in the system and it totally changes the fight. I'll teach you an 8 directional footwork pattern that I've formulated, it's the foundation for the system and I'll choreograph a fight so that you can see how the system works.


      Fighting for Film

      Working in front of a camera is very different from performing on stage for an audience. There’s only one eye watching you, but it sees absolutely everything. We’ll be looking to make sure all the hits sell to the camera, and how choice of angles and camera movement can enhance the moment and push the realism and danger.

      This intensive will take place at the Howard Gittis Student Center (HGSC) South, 2nd Floor - 1755 N 13th St, Philadelphia, PA 19122. Please access the HGSC South through the door on 13th street, as opposed to the entrance to HGSC North on the corner.

      The day will run from 10am to 5pm with a short break for lunch.

    • Historical Combat Intensive:

      Seek the Openings: Armored Combat

       

      The PSCW is thrilled to host Jess Finley for one of this year's all-day intensives on Friday, November 22nd!

      Defeating well-made armor is a tricky requirement, especially as time passes and armor becomes more effective at covering openings in the opponent. Wearing armor and fighting in it has it’s own challenges, particularly to breath and sight. So how do we overcome someone who is so well protected? In this workshop we will study the application of fight principles to an armored combatant. We will explore how wearing a full suit of armor changes our movement patterns and how to defeat that armor when presented with it by forcing our opponent to provide us with an opening to be exploited. We’ll begin with spear and sword, and then explore how to close distance safely in order to come to a position where victory can be achieved with the dagger.

      This year, the total cost of the main 2 day workshop of November 23rd and 24th is $350. A single day admission is $175. We recognize this is an increase from the past 3 years, but due to rising operational costs the PSCW has decided to return to pre-2020 rates. 

      If you are Union or an SAFD member, please contact philascw@gmail.com for information on discounts provided for those members. Only one discount code can be used at at time and only applys to the main weekend workshop.

      -A full weekend tuition (Nov 23rd and 24th) will get you up to 8 classes, access to our Vendor lunch and our Q&A sesion with our instructing staff. A 1 day tuition will get you 4 classes and the rest of the above mentioned items depending on which day you attend.

      -Our Friday Intensives (Nov 22nd) are a separate cost from the main workshop. The cost for either workshop is $125--you can only choose one!

      -Unfortunately, we will not be doing our usual Cheesesteak lunches this year. But we will be helping to provide a list of places to purchase food in the area of the workshop. 

      SLIDING SCALE TICKETS

      We provide a certain number of tickets at a sliding scale option. We understand EVERYONE is struggling right now and we want to make sure everyone has access to this education. We encourage you to check out the waitlist for our Pay It Forward Scholarship as well. If we get to a point where we have more names on our Waitlist than we have funds for, then we will contact everyone on the waitlist to coordinate options.

      If you find yourself in a financial situaition where you could lend a helping hand, no matter how small, we encourage you to donate to our Pay it Forward fund. In this way, you could sponsor an opportunity for someone in our community to further their training. Any excess in this fund not put towards the tuition of another student will be rolled over to next year. Help us help our community! 

      Refund Policy

      **This year, we can only offer a 50% refund and it must be requested minimum 24 hours before the first day of the workshop. If you are unable to attend and contact us after the workshop has already begun, we cannot provide a refund.

      Due to Covid concerns, if you find that you are unable to attend due to needing to self quarantine or receive a positive test, please contact us to discuss further refund options.**
