Application details
- The closing date for submissions is 11 September 2024.
- While any language would be acceptable for proposed projects, the languange for the application process is English.
- This online submission form is the only application process for the programme and manual submissions via other means will not be accepted.
- There is no registration / application fee to submit an application for for the UJ Artists in Residence Programme.
- The outcome will be available on 1 November 2024.
Residency details
- Residencies will run from January - December 2025 (12-months) or January 2025 - December 2026 (24-months) for Film & Television and Literary Art projects.
- A monthly stipend of R10,000 is made available to Artists in Residence. This payment is subject to statutory deductions.
- Applicants may apply for remote and/or physical residencies, noting that a very limited number of offices, studios, rehearsal and performance spaces are available.
Creative Output Research
- The Creative Research Output must demonstrate the application of artistic research methodology and provide new insights into the respective subfield or discipline.
- The Creative Research Output must demonstrate new research insight; creative originality and competent academic contribution that is contextually situated in the field. It must have contemporary relevance in its subfield and demonstrate new research insights and scholarly rigour in its methodological process. It must show the integration between the final ‘product’ and process. The creative output must demonstrate scholarly rigour and complexity of the process.
- The Creative Research Output should significantly differentiate itself by demonstrating high levels of artistic thought and illustrating high quality levels of innovation. It should further advance understanding within fields and across the research spectrum.
Criteria
- Emerging and established artist-academics from across the globe, but preferably with a link to Africa, are eligible.
- Applicants must hold a relevant post-school qualification.
- Applicants may not have any affiliation with other South African tertiary institutions.
- Current UJ employees are not eligible to apply.
- Only proposals with creative output potential and that fall within the pre-determined disciplines will be considered.

- The decision of the University's Creative Output Task Team is final and no further correspondence regarding applications will be entered into.
- You confirm that the information provided in the application and proposal is true and accurate.
- No late or incomplete submissions will be considered.
- Monthly stipends paid to Artists in Residence is subject to statutory deductions.
- The Programme is designed as a stimulus effort and no additional seed or project funding, travel, accommodation, and per diems will be made available through the Artists in Residence Programme over and above the monthly stipend. The majority of project funding must be available/confirmed and/or the the scope of the project must be adjustable to available resources.
- Majority of residencies are remote engagements and applicants need to note that access to office, studio, rehearsal and/or performance space should not be a neccesity for the project to be implemented (but rather additional support if possible).
- Artists in Residence need to be able to self-manage and work independently and not solely / heavily rely on their hosts for the delivery of the project. Hosts are responsible for:
- Providing an enabling / supportive environment for Artists in Residence.
- Take on a line-manager role and monitor Artists in Residence's progress and milestones.
- Arrange and regularly meet with Artists in Residence to ensure they meet their deadlines for deliverables.
- Be the custodian of the creative output research.
- Provide creative research supervision/support.
- Provide support with development of annotation and creative output forms.
- Ensure submission of creative output via their faculty.
- When possible/logical, hosts may involve Artists in Residence in limited department/division activities such as workshops, masterclasses and/or guest lectures.
