Becoming certified involves consulting the consultant as an evaluator and gatekeeper for EMDRIA. As a result, the expectations for group consultation going toward your certification hours will look a little different than other consultations.
Here are the expectations as you work with me in group consultation toward certification:
1. You are expected to come prepared to present case material, complete with notes on that case. You have received a case presentation form. Please use it when you present cases or case-related questions. I expect you to come to the group prepared with cases and questions.
2. Do not include any information that will identify the case you present on materials you share with me.
3. You are expected to practice within the ethical guidelines of both your license and professional associations. (EMDRIA states that if there is no professional association, the APA’s Code of Ethics will be the standard for all EMDRIA members. You are responsible for staying current on the laws and ethics applicable to them.)
4. Examples of your clinical work are essential to the consultation process and should include video, near-verbatim transcripts, audio recordings, and/or live demonstrations. You are to obtain the necessary releases from clients. The video/audio/verbatim must include your words and interventions.
5. You will demonstrate proficiency and fidelity in applying the 8-phase, 3-pronged approach of standard EMDR therapy. This may include reading and training outside of consultation.
6. To assess your use of the EMDR protocol, I expect you to give two case presentations to two groups, each lasting 20 minutes. The first presentation should cover phases 1 and 2, including history taking, case conceptualization, treatment plan sequencing, and preparation done with the client to ensure readiness for reprocessing. I have a form to guide you with this presentation. The second presentation should include phases 3-4, including near verbatim summaries, video, or audio.
7. Clarifying consultation vs. supervision: Consultation is not supervision. The consultation focuses on mastering standard EMDR therapy and integrating EMDR into your practice. You are responsible for the therapeutic relationship with your clients and competency in the modalities you offer. As a consultant, I do not hold liability for how you practice. If you seek consultation toward EMDRIA Certification, I will evaluate your proficiency and fidelity in implementing the 8-phase, 3-pronged approach of standard EMDR therapy. Consultation does not substitute for foundational psychotherapy skills. Should concerns in this area become evident, I may need to remedy these concerns before writing a recommendation for certification.
8. Completing 10 hours of group consultation with me will result in a letter confirming your hours. I will only be able to write a recommendation letter if a) I believe your skills are sufficient for certification and b) you have attended a minimum of 5 individual consultation sessions with me, including my watching a video/listening to audio/reading a transcript of your taking a client through all 8 phases of the EMDR protocol.
9. If you choose to pursue individual consultation, I will review a separate individual consultation form with you then.
10. I will share a copy of the certification checklist that I will use to assess your application of EMDR therapy, including all eight phases, the three prongs of the protocol, and the overall AIP model.
