The I Can Excel (ICE)  after school program is for girls who are students in grades 1-12 (enrollment age restricted to ages 5-18). The schedule for the 2024-2025 program year will be shared soon.

Participants who miss more than the allotted number of absences (5) may be considered to have withdrawn from the program and it may affect their ability to enroll for future seasons.

Given Covid restrictions should become necessary, our ICE program schedule may include a combination of our academic/tutoring learning platform which may include virtual components , in-person outdoor fitness (while weather permits & then shift to virtual fitness) and in-person skating (indoor and outdoor). Our number one priority is to follow the Center of Disease Control (CDC) most recent recommendations for social distancing and safety measures to ensure our staff and students remain healthy and safe.

Enrollment age is restricted to girls in grades 1-12 (ages 5-18). Final schedule info will be shared to include: tutoring schedule and your student's day of the week for academic enrichment, fitness and skating (based on their age/grade group).

Participants are expected to attend in person or log onto the virtual platforms only as needed on their assigned day(s) and attend their fitness and rink day/days as assigned. Attendance will be taken each day during the academic platforms and at the fitness and skating rink (locations will be shared). Participants who miss more than the allotted number of absences (5) mqy be considered to have withdrawn from the program and it may affect their ability to enroll for future seasons.

If you have a concern about your ability to commit to the full program, please discuss this with staff before registering.

I understand and agree that participating in the FSD programs carries the possibility of exposure to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).   By attending the program, I agree that I am assuming on my behalf and on the behalf of the participant, the risk of potential exposure to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and any and all consequences that may result from such exposure, including but not limited to, transmission of the virus, physical injury, psychological injury, pain, suffering, illness, temporary or permanent disability, death, or economic loss.  I agree to release and forever discharge the Releases as described above.

I agree and warrant that my program participant will not participate in in-person programming if she experiences symptoms of COVID19, including, without limitation, fever, cough or shortness of breath, or has a suspected or diagnosed/confirmed case of COVID-19.

I agree to notify the Management immediately if I believe that any of these symptoms arise.

I also give FSD the right to use all photographs or videos taken of my child during FSD sessions for advertising or promotional material in its original or modified form, without any entitlement to compensation, in all media now or hereafter known, with or without name attribution.

I agree that all of the information provided above is true and correct.

I agree to notify Figure Skating in Detroit of any changes in my child’s physical or mental health between the dates of registration and the start of classes as well as during the season. I hereby consent and authorize the administration of all medical treatments advisable or necessary under the judgment of emergency room physicians or any other clinical physicians with the understanding that I will be notified as soon as possible.

  • Additional Forms

    • Participant & Parent/Guardian Agreements
    • FSD Participant's Letter of Commitment

    • I understand that being a participant in Figure Skating in Detroit is a privilege and I will have to work hard all year to grow as a student in academics and a skater on the ice.

In order to be a strong member of the FSD community, I promise:

To live up to the high expectations set for me by the FSD staff and my family
To come to programming on time and prepared to participate every scheduled day
To make sure I have a responsible adult ready to sign me out on time every day unless I have permission to sign myself out
To come every day unless I am sick and to contact pkennebrew@figureskatingindetroit.org on academic days or nrobinson@figureskatinindetroit.org on skating days as soon as possible if I cannot come
To come to the rink wearing my FSD shirt/jacket and plain black leggings and remembering all my equipment, especially my skates, homework, and a book to read so that I can have a successful day.
To come on academic days with my book bag, homework, and everything I need to complete my school work.
To fuel my body by bringing a healthy snack and leaving junk food outside of FSD (no pop, fast food, Starbucks, chips, cookies or other unapproved food items, please see staff re questions.)
To continually strive for an A average, while knowing that I am considered in good standing with a B average in my core subjects
To bring in every report card I get so FSD can help me maintain at least a B average in my classes and to attend mandatory extra tutoring if I am struggling
To leave distractions like cell phones and electronics at home or allow them to be collected before programming.
To try my best in every activity and have fun!!
I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year with FSD and expect that this will be a safe place for me to come so that I can make friends, learn new skills, and have fun.

I understand that if I choose to demonstrate behaviors that are unsafe or disrespectful to adults or other students that I will have to accept the consequences which may include being sent home, having a meeting with my parents, or even being asked to leave FSD.

I am excited to begin a new year with FSD. By signing below, I promise to do my best to live up to all of the expectations above.

    • Parent/Guardian Expectations

      1. Rules and Regulations: Parents/Guardians are expected to read and familiarize themselves with the FSD Handbook, particularly FSD rules and regulations. Parents/Guardians are expected to review the rules with their daughter(s).
      2. Report Cards: Parents/Guardians are responsible for submitting a copy of all report cards and/or progress reports as soon as they become available. At a minimum, FSD prefers 3 different report cards (Fall, Spring, and June) if that is possible based on the school schedule. FSD may request a progress report to be completed by the child's teacher(s) if a report card is not available. Students with missing documentation, including report card, will not be permitted to participate in programming.

      3. Medical Release Forms: Every participant needs an up-to-date medical form on file indicating she is cleared to engage in physical activity and up-to-date with medical care. Students will not be permitted to skate if FSD does not have a medical form completed in the last year on file.

      4. Snacks: On Ice Skating Days Only. Parents/Guardians should provide their daughter(s) with a healthy snack. FSD staff reserve the right to confiscate candy and other junk food which does not give athletes the fuel they need to skate. A healthy snack will be provided on academic days.

      5. Equipment: Parents/Guardians are responsible for their daughter’s equipment. If skates are lost or stolen a $175 fee will be imposed.  If skates are damaged it is the parent responsibility to pay for repairs.

      6. Drop Off and Pick Up:  On regular program days, parents/guardians/authorized adults are expected to drop off their daughter(s) on time and pick them up on time (as outlined in the handbook). Parents/guardians may not remain in the academic center or near the skating rink while classes are in session.

      7. Late Pick-Up Policy: Parents/Guardians/Authorized Adults arriving more than 15 minutes after the designated dismissal time will be fined $20 and $10 for every 15 minutes thereafter, unless there is a dire emergency. The fine must be paid within 2 weeks in order for the participant to continue participating.

      8. Sign Out: Parents/Guardians/Authorized Adults are required to sign out participant(s) before leaving the site. Participants will not be released unless an authorized adult is physically present!  Participants under the age of 18 will not be permitted to sign themselves out.

      9. Winter Skating Event & Spring Show. Parents are required to meet the 10 tickets per family minimum (or make the equivalent donation) fundraiser goal for the program year's skating performances. Events will be determined. Participants who do not meet the minimum will not skate in the Winter Skating Party exhibition or participate in the Spring Show. More information will be provided.

I have read these expectations and agree to all of the above requirements for my child’s participation with FSD. I understand Figure Skating in Detroit is an education and skating enrichment program, not a competitive skating program.  I agree to support FSD’s expectations and goals for my daughter(s) as she/they work(s) with the staff to build a positive self-image, self-discipline, teamwork, leadership and academic achievement.

  • I Can Excel (ICE) Tuition Policies

  • Tuition for I Can Excel (ICE) will be based on a sliding scale from $200-$575 depending on income and household size using the Federal Government scale used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price lunch below.  (see sliding scale image on last page (page 6))

How do I qualify for sliding scale tuition?

Provide us with a copy of either:

The 1st 2 pages of your 2023 1040 tax return

Early bird tuition: Pay your tuition in full on or before September 30, 2024 to take $50 off tuition.

    What does my tuition cover?

It costs FSD more than $6000 per year per child to run our programs. We are able to offset more than 95% of this cost through the efforts of our CEO, development team, and generous supporters. However, families are also asked to pay a nominal tuition fee and to participate in additional fundraising at the Winter Skating Party and Spring Show. Tuition and family fundraising raise about 4-5% of FSD's operating budget each year.

However, in exchange, each participant receives:(Please note these items are a property of FSD and are expected to be returned at the end of the program)

    • a team uniform (Fleece Jacket and T-Shirt)
    • skates with bag and soakers to use for their time in the program

    • and more!

    How do I pay tuition?

Tuition and fees can be paid using a credit card or debit card only.

FSD does not accept cash or personal checks.

A payment plan is available for parents who elect to make a $100 downpayment and monthly payments thereafter.  Tuition balances must be paid in full by December 31, 2024 in order to prevent suspension from the program.

Refund Policy: Students who withdraw before November 1,2024 may receive a 50% refund. Students who withdraw November 1 or later will receive no refund.

  • Equipment Reminder

New Participants receive their own skates and skate bag to use for their time in the program. These items are to be returned at end of program.

Lost or stolen skates will incur an additional $175 replacement fee. Damaged skates needing repair will be at the cost of parents.
