THE HISTORY
Since its founding, the Saint Louis Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter (SLMAC) has been committed to empowering high school senior young women through a transformative program. Launched in 1998, the Rites of Passage program honors African cultural heritage and the legacy of achievement, preparing participants for the journey into college and adulthood. Drawing on the philosophy of the Sankofa Bird, the program embraces lessons from the past to inspire future success.
OUR MISSION
To support high school senior young women in transitioning to womanhood by fostering mental, spiritual, social, and financial preparedness, encouraging lifelong learning and community engagement.
THE PROGRAM
The Journey to womanhood begins in August with the passage culminating in February. Through a variety of workshops, cultural experiences and landmark activities, participants enhance their personal growth and development, cultivate spiritual awareness and develop an appreciation for their cultural heritage. The final passage is marked by the public celebration, the Jabberwock, where the participants publicly display their talents and skills gained through the six-month long training, along with the community celebrates with them as the conclusion of the program.
THE PROCESS
Through regular training, experiential learning, and family involvement, participants embody the seven principles of Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba), enriching their journey to womanhood.
