  • Plot Synopsis

Based on the famous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, in which a Tennessee schoolteacher was charged with violating state law by teaching about Darwin's theory of evolution, INHERIT THE WIND fictionalizes the story in order to make a broader dramatic point about people having the freedom to think for themselves. The key courtroom conflict between Matthew Harrison Brady (representing 3-time Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan) and Henry Drummond (representing famed attorney Clarence Darrow) is one of the most famous scenes in American drama.
