  • What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event—especially one involving death, serious injury, or a threat to yourself or others. In the military, common causes include combat exposure, IED blasts, sexual assault or harassment, and witnessing the death or suffering of others.

Not all trauma leads to PTSD, but if the effects of a traumatic experience are disrupting your life long after the event, you may be dealing with PTSD.

🧠 Is It PTSD or Something Else?
PTSD often overlaps with other mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or substance use disorders. If you’ve experienced trauma and have ongoing emotional struggles, it’s worth getting evaluated. A professional diagnosis isn't just helpful for treatment—it can also support your VA claim.

  • 🔍 Key Symptoms of PTSD
PTSD symptoms are grouped into four main categories. You don’t need to have all of them to qualify for a diagnosis or for VA benefits:

    1. Re-Experiencing the Trauma

    • Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
    • Feeling like you're back in the traumatic moment
Physical reactions (sweating, heart pounding) when reminded of the event

    2. Avoidance

    • Avoiding people, places, or situations that remind you of the trauma
    • Trying not to think or talk about what happened
    • Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities

    3. Negative Thoughts and Mood Changes

    • Feeling numb, hopeless, or emotionally distant
    • Guilt or shame (especially survivor's guilt)
    • Trouble remembering parts of the trauma
    • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy

    4. Hyperarousal and Reactivity

    • Constantly on edge or easily startled
    • Angry outbursts or irritability
    • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
    • Reckless or self-destructive behavior

  • Treatment & Symptoms

  • If you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, you may be reluctant to discuss it in your statement. Keep in mind that veterans often resort to the use of drugs and alcohol because they can’t cope with the symptoms of PTSD. We encourage you to be candid with the reader.

    • When did you begin to use drugs or alcohol?
    • Did your use increase after you experienced the stressful events that you described earlier in your statement?
    • Have you been in treatment? Are you currently in treatment? If so, where?
    • If you’re still using drugs or alcohol, how often do you use them? Do your best to explain why you use them.
    • Are you now clean and sober? If so, for how long?
    • Are you feeling hopeful? Angry? Discouraged? Depressed?
    • Are you getting treatment for PTSD? Do you intend to remain in treatment? Why (or why not)?
    • Are you just living from day to day, or can you see the outlines of your future?
    • What are your ambitions? How close are you to realizing them?
    • Have you missed workdays due to your mental health? (how many work days? did you need a doctor's note? does this affect your pay? Exactly why they were missed?)
    • Lower Productivity? (at work? at home? describe all task you struggle with or can no longer complete, did you use to be able to complete this task? do you require help to complete the task? Does this affect your pay? Does this affect your mental health? Does this affect your physical appearance such as washing and grooming yourself?)
    • Strained family relationships or friendships,
    • Trouble traveling, difficulty getting to stores or doctors appointments.
