Climate anxiety and despair can be isolating experiences - at one time we must be with the severity of our current world, and the uncertainty of the future. This is particularly true of the younger generations who know no other reality than an ever-increasing climate catastrophe. Embodying Climate Grief for Resilience is a Yom Kippur workshop specifically for young people to gather in exploration of the embodied and emotional impact of the climate crisis, in order to reduce shame and numbness to our more-than-human world. Using Jewish grief technologies such as Rabbi Joshua Heschel’s 3 ways to mourn (Silence, Tears, Singing) as a guide, participants will be led through a practice of shared grief to begin to move through paralyzing individual anxiety toward the possibility of collective action, while building community care. Together, we will cultivate strategies of resilience to fight compassion fatigue and moral injury from the ever-worsening climate disaster, dreaming on this Holiest of Holy Days, into the future of a world settled in peace and safety.
