The college defines hardship as a situation where there is a financial shortfall from some unexpected circumstance. This cannot be either a situation that was pre-existing before you started your course, or something that could be fairly easily foreseen. If something is pre-existing the committee is likely to conclude that you in fact did not have the finance in place, and therefore didn’t accurately fill out the financial guarantee forms. Spending more than the suggested amounts (please see University webpages below) is not an unexpected and unavoidable circumstance. Additionally, for example, failure of a laptop out of warranty is something that can be foreseen to some extent and therefore we are unlikely to consider laptop purchases as hardship. We are not able in most circumstances to cover private medical treatment, as the college cannot afford to make this commitment for everyone bearing in mind the expenses involved.
