By 1899, New York had become at "big" city -- the five boroughs had consolidated the year before and the city, on cusp of a new century, had established itself as America's premier cultural and business center. Around this time, the city began celebrating its own history in depth for the first time. Using the 1899 guidebook "Nooks and Corners of Old New York" as our structure, we'll take a look at the city that had one foot in the future and one planted firmly in the past.
