  • Introduction, Goal, and Purpose

    The Indiana Bar Foundation Mock Trial Diversity Initiative is an effort of the Foundation and its partners to increase the availability of mock trial statewide through the reduction of financial and systemic barriers to participation.

    Legal advisors and mentors from the legal community will be available to participating schools as part of the initiative. 

    The Indiana Bar Foundation will partner with MTDI schools to offer:

    • Grants to fund costs associated with Mock Trial, including but not limited to: teacher stipends, transportation, food, business clothing, supplies, registration fee, lodging, sub pay, and technology.
      • Grants begin at $2,500 with additional funding for those advancing to the state competition
    • Training at Introduction to Mock Trial Workshops.  Professional Developments are scheduled in South Bend, Evansville, Merrillville, and Indianapolis in the Fall 2024
    • Resources for teachers and students to learn mock trial, including introduction videos, graphic organizers, lesson plans, standards alignment document, past mock trial cases, annotated video of a mock trial
    • Local Legal Advisor assistance through partnerships with Indiana law firms
  • Eligibility

    Schools that have a student population of at least 40% students of color and 40% free/reduced lunch are eligible to participate as a MTDI school. 

    Note: The Indiana Bar Foundation has used data available from the Indiana Department of Education for its stats.  Schools that do not have their demographic data publicly available on the Indiana Department of Education website or are close to these metric points should still apply and have a conversation with Tim Kalgreen regarding your circumstances.

  • Principal Awareness & Approval

    The Indiana Bar Foundation wants to make sure the school administration is aware of the particpation in mock trial and the funding that is forthcoming to the school. 

    Please download the form for your principal (or school leader equivelent) to read and sign.  The signed form should be scanned and uploaded as part of this application using the button below.

    The Indiana Bar Foundation needs to have a proposed budget from each particpating school indicating how you intend to spend the grant funds.

    In the box below, please let the Bar Foundation know to whom the check should be made out and where it should be sent.

    The Bar Foundation strongly prefers to send the payment directly to the school (or corporation) or a 501(c)3 nonprofit association with the school (ie PTA group or school Foundation).  If this is not possible please let us know.

     

  • Legal Advisor Information

  • Teams will be assigned their regional location by the Indiana Bar Foundation. Your team will compete in the regional competition closest to where they are geographically located.  Contact the Bar Foundation if you have a conflict with the date of the regional closest to you.
