    Get involved in the Efficiency for Access Design Challenge 2024-2025

  • The Efficiency for Access Design Challenge aims to raise awareness and inspire student engagement in the off-grid sector, ultimately creating a pipeline of talent and innovation in the off-grid appliance sector globally. Off-grid companies have the opportunity to forge links with participating students and universities, by taking part in a curated programme of student support.

    Efficiency for Access and Engineers Without Borders UK are delighted to collaborate on the delivery of the Efficiency for Access Design Challenge. Efficiency for Access is a global coalition working to promote high performing appliances that enable access to clean energy for the world’s poorest people. The Efficiency for Access Coalition is coordinated jointly by CLASP, an international appliance energy efficiency and market development specialist not-for-profit organisation, and Energy Saving Trust, which specialises in energy efficiency product verification, data and insight, advice and research. Engineers Without Borders UK engages and galvanises the engineering community to serve all people and our planet better than ever before.

    We will share the survey data with Engineers Without Borders UK and CLASP (our Efficiency for Access Co-secretariat). We may also share the anonymised survey results with UK aid, from the UK government via the Transforming Energy Access platform and IKEA Foundation (the programme funders).   • 2. How to get involved

  • (1) Become a mentor

    Mentoring is an opportunity for you to connect with students and universities, and give insight into innovation within your sector. Mentors will be assigned a student team whose project aligns with their expertise and background to offer guidance and support.

    Could you act as a sounding board for student teams, providing them with advice, industry insight and inspiration?

    There will be a limited number of mentor opportunities available. It is anticipated that mentors will hold around six to seven digital meetings between November 2024 and May 2025, although timing will vary according to each participating university.

  • 2)  Co-present a webinar

    The webinars offer student teams an insight into the off-grid sector and an opportunity for you to build your profile amongst the academic community. As technical and market experts, there will be a range of opportunities to present and share specialist knowledge on specific themes during webinar sessions. Efficiency for Access Design Challenge Webinars will take place between October 2024 and June 2025 (exact dates to be determined).

    What is your specialism? Can you inspire and support students by sharing your expertise with our cohort of students from leading universities?

  • (3) Career Conversations

    A key feature of the Efficiency for Access Design Challenge is to provide opportunities for students to consider their career and professional future, possibly in the off-grid sector. This your chance to offer guidance to individual students on their future career. These short meetings will be arranged according to availability between January and April 2025 (exact dates to be determined).

  • (4)   Share online resources

    You can share relevant resources with students via the Industry Resources section of the Efficiency for Access Design Challenge website. This platform is a collection of insights, references and reports, into the off-grid sector and a useful research library for student teams throughout the competition. What innovation do you want to see? Can you help to lead the students to the most cutting-edge topics in your sector?

    In particular, we are interested in documents or research papers on the following subjects:
    - solar appliances market
    - latest technologies
    - end-user perspective.

    This document library will be made available to students on our website; therefore, we recommend providing non-sensitive information and documents. The documents can be sent to EforAchallenge@est.org.uk. If the files are too large, please get in touch.

  • (5) Internships

    Internships are an opportunity for recent graduates seeking experience in the clean energy sector, to have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, under the guidance of experienced professionals. Companies and organisations gain access to a talent pipeline to fill future entry-level positions with motivated and skilled individuals who will have already gained industry experience. 

  • (6) Reviewing panel

    Reviewers score and provide feedback to students on their fianl project submissions. This feedback is extremely valuable for students to better understand the designing process within the real context and will help them redefine their designs. 
     
    What is your know-how? Could you review a final design report and provide the teams with constructive feedback based on your knowledge and experience?  
     
    Final submissions reviews will take place at the end of April 2025. 

    If you are mentor of any team won't be eligible to be in the revieing or judging panels to ensure impartiality.
     

  • (7) Judging panel

    Student teams will pitch their design to a panel of judges. The panel will score the designs and provide constructive feedback to the pitching teams. These interactive sessions are a great opportunity for students to engage with sector experts and learn from you.

    Could assess a diverse range of designs against the assessment framework scoring criteria? Would you be able to share constructive feedback with the student teams?

    Pitching sessions will take place at the end of May 2025.
