The Citizens Police Academy (“CPA”) is an 8-10 week program designed to provide a direct overview of both law enforcement, First Responders and community-related functions. Graduates of this course will have a better understanding of the operation of the agency, and a greater awareness and appreciation of the daily challenges faced by law enforcement officers and First Responders across the country.
The Citizens Police Academy will meet once a week, for 8-10 weeks, on Wednesday evenings beginning October 9, 2024 from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. Classes will be held at the Middletown Police Department located at 130 Hampden Rd., Middletown, DE 19709. There is no fee to attend this program; however, we request that applicants be committed to the full length of the program.
**Selected applicants must have transportation, as we will meet at pre-selected locations on certain dates**
The Citizens Police Academy consists of classroom and hands-on instruction presented by law enforcement professionals and or professionals of related fields. Some of the topics covered during the CPA include the following:
- Functions of the 911/Dispatch Center
- Fraud Investigations
- Current Police Issues
- Defensive Tactics
- Officer Involved Shootings
- Scenario Based Training (Airsoft) / Ride-A-Longs
- Use of Force
- DUI
- Computer/Telephone Scams
- Police K-9 Operations
- Fire Safety & EMS Operations
- Range/Firearms Safety

All instructors for the academy are highly trained and experienced police officers or professionals in their respective fields. In addition to in-depth presentations and demonstrations over the 8-10 week period, class members will have the opportunity to participate in classroom discussions and hands-on scenarios. The Citizens Police Academy will conclude with a graduation ceremony on a later date.
The Citizens Police Academy is open to all Delaware residents 18 years old or older. A clear copy of a valid state-issued ID or driver’s license must be included with the application. A criminal history check will be performed on all applicants. The class size is limited to 25 students. Due to the high demand for this course, applicants are encouraged to apply immediately and include a valid email address on your application. Applicants will receive notification of selection to attend via email.
