• Open Call to Writers: Boston Art Review in collaboration with the Mayors Office of Arts and Culture.

Through the Un-monument partnership, Boston Art Review is holding an open call for writers who are interested in contributing their voice to the storytelling and discourse that will accompany this city-wide initiative. Between January–December 2025, writers will work with Boston Art Review to produce a series of texts that will live as an alternative way of engaging with the ideas, histories, and stories that Un-monument seeks to uplift.
  • Overview

Presently, Boston Art Review is inviting writers to submit their interest for receiving an assignment that will be commissioned either in January or March 2025. While writers are welcome to submit pitches for specific stories, it is not a requirement. Selected writers will be invited to pitch or receive an assignment based on the materials submitted in this application. Not all writers who submit interest will receive an invitation to contribute to the project.

To ensure each step of this work is rooted in equitable practices that serve diverse perspectives, Boston Art Review is working in collaboration with a cohort of advisors who are guiding our selection and commissioning process.

  • Assignments will ultimately fall into one of the three following categories:

    1. Stories about the projects that are supported through the Un-Monument initiative
Selected writers will be paired with artists, curators, and collectives who are creating work as part of the Un-Monument initiative and will be tasked with authoring profiles, interviews, and features that document the processes and concepts behind their work.

    2. Critical perspectives that rigorously engage with thematic ideas that trouble our understanding of monuments past, present, and future
These thematically driven essays will be an opportunity for both homing in on or zooming out from the ways in which we consider markers in our civic landscape, reexamine histories, and make plans for the future. If you already have an idea for a specific essay, you are welcome to submit your pitch here. If you are interested in this type of writing, but aren’t sure what your angle is yet, that’s okay too!

    3. Community voices, snap reviews, and responses to prompts
Throughout the publishing process, we may reach out to individuals to contribute short pieces, responses, or perspectives. Writers who are interested in contributing to this type of assignment should tell us about what makes your perspective unique and what kinds of stories you like to tell.

    Final product:

The goal for this project is for the written works to serve as documentation of the UN-MONUMENT | RE-MONUMENT | DE-MONUMENT program’s temporary monuments, curatorial collaborations, and artist research projects.

Our hope is to have the works live as stand alone pieces in either print or digital format, and for all the written pieces to exist together as a compendium or living archive.

Writers interested in this initiative should be flexible and open to conversations on the final form of their piece.

  • Pitches must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on one of the following deadlines: First deadline: Saturday, Nov 30th 2024, Second deadline: Tuesday, Jan 7th 2025, Last deadline: Wednesday, March 12th 2025.

Due to the nature of temporary monuments and pop up community events, lectures and gathering opportunities. Boston Art Review may review and assign applications on a rolling basis. We recommend that if you are pitching for a specific project you take into consideration: exhibition/installation opening date, key speaking events, closing date for exhibitions/installations.
