DEADLINE EXTENDED for submissions: Sept. 27, 2024
Fee to apply: $25 (for up to 3 works)
Curated by Ellen Sturm Niz, "He Said/She Said" is an online-only exhibition hosted by Amos Eno Gallery on Artsy.net, from October 25 to November 24, 2024. This exhibition invites artists to explore the nuanced and multifaceted interpretations of the phrase "He Said/She Said."
Traditionally associated with conflicting narratives and the complexities of communication, "He Said/She Said" serves as a springboard for artistic exploration. Artists are encouraged to delve into themes such as gender dynamics, the power of language, memory, and the subjective nature of truth. The exhibition aims to reveal how perspectives can shift, intersect, or clash, depending on who is telling the story.
Examples of possible interpretations include:
- Narrative Discrepancy: Artworks that depict the gap between two conflicting accounts, emphasizing the uncertainty and tension that arise from differing perspectives.
- Gendered Communication: Pieces that explore the societal expectations placed on communication between different genders, highlighting how these expectations influence the way stories are told and received. Is the phrase “he said, she said” even appropriate when gender is more than binary?
- Memory and Truth: Works that question the reliability of memory and the fluidity of truth, showcasing how personal histories can be reconstructed or distorted over time.
- Cultural and Social Commentary: Art that reflects on how "He Said/She Said" scenarios play out in broader social and cultural contexts, such as in media, politics, or legal systems. How might the theme of "He Said/She Said" mirror the dynamics of conflicting narratives and gender in the presidential election race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, and what does this reveal about the influence of language in shaping political discourse?
Through diverse mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture, digital art, and mixed media, "He Said/She Said" offers a platform for artists to challenge and reinterpret the phrase, inviting viewers to consider the complexities of communication, perception, and truth. This exhibition will not only showcase compelling visual narratives but also provoke thought and discussion about the power and pitfalls of language in shaping our understanding of the world.
Artists based anywhere in the U.S. are encouraged to apply. In addition to being included in the Artsy.net exhibition, accepted artists may be highlighted in Amos Eno Gallery email newsletters and social media posts.
Plus, a virtual artists talk for all participating artists will be held during the show. Date/time and virtual platform TBD.
