  • The Rwandan Genocide: Media, Memory, and History
    March 12 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm EDT
with Dr. Jean-Marie Higiro, Western New England University

    Where: Dwares JCC

Who: Like-minded adults who want to learn about history and humanity

How can words and images fuel mass violence, and later shape how it is remembered? Dr. Jean-Marie Higiro, a survivor and scholar, will examine the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, the power of media campaigns in inciting violence, and the ongoing struggles and resilience of post-genocide Rwanda. His talk offers urgent lessons about propaganda, memory, and responsibility.

Before the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, Dr. Higiro served as Director of Rwanda’s national information office, overseeing state radio and television. During the violence, he and his family were targeted for his moderate views and were forced to flee the country. He later settled in the United States and has dedicated his career to teaching about media, propaganda, and the dangers of mass violence.

Dr. Higiro is traveling all the way to Providence to share his experience and scholarship with our community. If you are able, we hope you will join us to learn from him and to show support for his visit. RSVP here
