  • Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! The Elderberries Volunteer Program is for community members ages 55 and older. This program aims to enhance the experiences of both students and teachers, while fostering a multigenerational community at Heartwood. We believe that people of all ages benefit from being outside and connecting with others on a weekly basis.

    This role includes:

    • Visit 1 to 3 outdoor classes, with students ages varying from 3 to 13, at Saint Edward State Park
    • Sub in for each co-teacher while they take a short break, the other co-teacher will be present to lead the class.
    • Spend time with students in the forest in all weather conditions, whether that is talking with students during lunch time, reading books, or playing in forest games.
    • Monthly 1 hour Elderberries meeting led by a Heartwood staff member. We will cover topics related to the role as well as learn about and explore the ecosystem of the park.

    Gear and clothes that are needed for this role:

    • Raingear
    • Shoes that will keep your feet dry
    • For cold days: insulating layers, gloves, and a warm hat

    Who should apply?

    • Grandparents, friends, neighbors, and community members who enjoy being around kids and love be outside!
    • Volunteers must be able to be on their feet for the length of their shift and walk on uneven terrian.

    Background checks are required for all adults working and volunteering at Heartwood.

  • Elderberries is offered in seasonal sessions:

    Fall - September to mid-December

    Winter - January to Mid-March

    Spring - Mid-March to Mid-June

    Summer - Mid-June to Mid-August

     

    FAQ:

    What if I have a vacation/trip planned, can I still apply?

    • Yes, we can accomodate vacations and trips. If you know you are going to be gone for longer than 4 weeks in 1 season during the school year, and 3 weeks during the summer, please consider volunteering during another season.

    What if the season has already started, should I still apply?

    • Yes! If we have an opening, we would love for you to start whenever you can.
  • Liability Waiver: I understand that Heartwood Nature Programs take place entirely outdoors, and that there are risks which naturally occur whenever children and adults are outside. BY SIGNING this Liability Waiver I agree to hold landowners, Heartwood Nature Programs and all of its members harmless for any injury resulting from my visit and volunteer work. I further agree to work safely around all others and place their safety and my own above all other considerations. I will notify a Heartwood Nature Programs representative immediately if I should receive any injury. If fatigued I will stop work until I recover. I will remain hydrated and watch for potential hazards to myself and other volunteers. I will report unsafe conditions or behavior at once.
