Paint-Outs are open to all OPM members and their guests. Participants are not required to register, but it's helpful so we can communicate any last minute changes to locations or weather cancellations. Participants may arrive any time during the duration of the paint-out, but keep in mind that painters will migrate to painting locations once the paint-out begins.
This is a Saturday Paint-Out, with an optional 2nd day of painting in Duluth on Sunday ...
Day One: Saturday, October 19, 2024
Location: Sax-Zim Bog, (Welcome Center, near Meadowlands, MN)
Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Description of Location:
- Amazing Tamarack and Black Spruce colors
- The Sax-Zim Bog is a large area of wetland forests near Meadowlands and Cotton, MN. Much of the area is private property (do NOT trespass) ... with a few public natural areas. Most of our painting options will consist of roadside views of tamarack and spruce bogs.
- Restrooms are available at the Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center
- Sax-Zim Bog is a renowned birding area. Consider making a donation to SaxZim.org in their effort to support conservation and outdoor education.
Meet:
Meet at the Sax-Zim Welcome Center (see map).

From there, painters will disperse by car to areas with great painting opportunities. Matt will provide a map of the area with suggested painting locations.
Lunch:
Meet back at the Welcome Center at Noon for outside lunch at picnic tables. Continue painting for the afternoon from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Day Two (optional): Sunday, October 20, 2024
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (Noon)
Matt has space for a handful of painters at his house (inside lodging or camping outside) on Saturday night. Those interested in this option should contact Matt to secure a spot.
On Sunday, we will paint on Duluth's Park Point (9:00 am to Noon), which features Lake Superior, grassy dunes, a few tamaracks, and a lovely pine forest.
