Beginning with the Transfiguration of Jesus in Chapter 17, the Gospel of Matthew continues to reveal through Jesus' teachings what it means to be a disciple. This second part of the study of Matthew reveals a growing tension as Jesus ministers around Jerusalem, is arrested and crucified.   We spend the last weeks on the Passion of Jesus beginning with his anointing in Chapter 26.  Revealed as Emmanuel (God with us) at the start of the Gospel, Jesus will promise his continuing presence as the disciples are commissioned at the close of the Gospel. We will use the Little Rock Commentary for the study and reflection questions.  We will also pray together and support each other, to help and encourage one another with challenges which we are facing.

Materials Needed: Tom Schuessler will order your workbook. Cost: ~$15 to be paid to Tom.

  • Kingdom of Happiness- Living the Beatitudes in Everyday Life - Tan Publishing | Level - Intermediate | Thursdays: starting Jan. 9 - Feb. 27 | 8:30 -10:00am | Holy Family Boardroom | Leader: Marian Freund (meafreund@gmail.com or (920) 923-1775)

We live in a fallen world. This reality has become clearer in the last several decades as the secular world has sought to eradicate all traces of God and conquer Christendom. While this larger battle is mostly out of our control, we can take comfort in the fact that we are called to reign in another kingdom and leave the slavery of this world behind.

The best way to throw off the yoke of slavery this world seeks to bind us with is to live out the lessons Our Lord taught us in his Sermon on the Mount, most especially the Beatitudes. Sacred Scripture tells us that Christ “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6-7). He invites us to turn our won worlds upside down as well with the eight life-altering ways of living.

At times, the Beatitudes may seem paradoxical. Why would we want to be poor or meek? Why would we want to mourn? Why would we want to show mercy or be a peacemaker when the world rewards ruthlessness, and pure when it celebrates immorality? Why would we hunger for righteousness when the world has so much else to feed us with? And why would we want to be persecuted?

Yet Christ told us that those who live these ways of life would be blessed. This is what the word beatitude means – “blessed” – which also means “happiness.” If we have the courage to trust in his words and follow him, we will come to know what true happiness really is.

Embark on this 8-session journey with Father Jeffrey Kirby, who will show you the path to the kingdom and give you the strength and wisdom to turn your world upside down.

  • An Intro to Vatican II - Tan Publishing | Level - Intermediate | Thursdays: starting March 6 - May 1, 2025 | 8:30 -10:00am | Holy Family St. Agnes Library  | Leader: Marian Freund (meafreund@gmail.com or (920) 923-1775)

An Introduction to Vatican II begins by focusing on the reasons which gave rise to Vatican II. Dr. Jem Sullivan examines the common misconceptions regarding the council, explores its general principles and themes, and finally considers the key documents which emerged from the council. Dr. Sullivan proposes and faithfully considers such probing questions as...

    Why study Vatican II?
What is the relationship between the Church and the Modern world?
How can the Church defend the deposit of faith given the rise of science and the loss of religiosity?
What is the essence of the Sacred Liturgy and how can it be most faithfully preserved?
Are the ministers of the Church in need of reform?
Or is the Church itself simply "outdated"?

The Church's decision to form a council begins with Christ's commission to "preach the Gospel to all nations." The Magisterium is therefore given the task of teacher, and the responsibility of authentically interpreting the Word of God. Every Church council, including Vatican II, is first and foremost an ecclesial event that uniquely expresses, at a given moment in history, the divinely entrusted authority of the Magisterium and the communion of faith expressed in Church’s teaching office. If the Church is commissioned to teach, we as the Body of Christ must listen and continue to pass on the deposit of faith.

  • Reclaiming Feminism: The Church's Traditions and Teachings on the Dignity of Women from Tan Publishing | Level - Intermediate | Thursdays: starting May 8 - May 29, 2025 | 8:30 -10:00am | Holy Family St. Agnes Library | Leader: Marian Freund (meafreund@gmail.com or (920) 923-1775)

    (Facilitated by Teresa Tomeo)
We've all heard about the "war on women," and most of us have been told that the Catholic Church is one of the main institutional oppressors of women. But it isn't true. There is indeed a war on women, but the Catholic Church stands firmly on the side of women against oppression!

The world has sold women a bill of goods. When it comes to abortion, birth control, or sex outside of marriage, women are told these actions or lifestyles are necessary for their true freedom. This so-called "freedom," however, has been narrowly defined by and limited to sexuality, and brings with it a host of physical, emotional and spiritual consequences.

In this elective, Teresa Tomeo takes a closer look at these "freedoms" and relates how medical science, sociological studies, and surveys performed by major secular institutions all show the truth of Catholic teaching concerning the fallout of the sexual revolution touted by radical feminists.

Compare for yourself what the culture says about the Church and women to what the Church really teaches about women.

Finally, Teresa Tomeo will help you understand the Scriptures in a new way in terms of Jesus' interactions with women. You'll be able to appreciate his desire for women to embrace their true dignity and identity as daughters of the King of Kings.

Throughout Church history, men and women have spent their lives on mission, committed to spreading the gospel message. They were disciples who made disciples.
