    Powerful Potatoes by Rachel Allnutt
  • The Literacy Project is an annual interactive learning experience where each participating Colorado classroom receives a FREE class kit complete with educational resources and enough supplies to conduct hands-on activities with students. Literacy Projects strive to meet Colorado Academic Standard connections for Language Arts, Social Studies, STEM, and AFNR. This is a free program for Colorado preK-12 classes. To offset increased postage, supplies and printing costs, OUT OF STATE Classrooms are asked for a fee of $10 per kit. Each kit has supplies and materials for 30 students.

Grades PreK-12 students will learn about planting, raising and harvesting Colorado Potatoes as well as gain information about nutrition and potato related agricultural careers. Curriculum resources include age approprate PreK-12 curriculum and activities tied to Colorado Academic Standards, potato samples, a charming Prek-5th grade book entitled Plenty of Potatoes written by Rachel Allnutt and illustrated by Sierra Gerber, agricultural career information suitable for grades 6-12 and a link to History Colorado's Rachel Storm's virtual field trip about potatoes, plus much more!

Please accurately complete all the information below to ensure proper delivery of your kit and supplies. You may sign up one class, one grade level, or multiple classes/grades. If signing up multiple classes, we ask that one person be the main contact. To avoid duplicates, please consider double checking with other teachers and administrators in your school/organization to see if they have signed up.

The Literacy Project is brought to you by Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom (CoAITC) with the support of this growing list of sponsors: Colorado Potato Administration Committee, Northern Colorado Potatoes, Colorado Department of Agriculture, The Fence Post, Colorado Farm Show, Bank of Colorado, Colorado Farm Bureau, National Western Stock Show, Colorado FFA Foundation, Dr. Temple Grandin, Dr. John Matsushima, Nancy and Gene Oliver and many more, donate today!

    LIMITED SIGN-UP TIMEFRAME:  December 17, 2025 to January 15, 2026!

This program takes place from mid-March through May of 2026.

Ag/FFA teachers are encouraged to request the Middle/High School Level Kit for their students and then check with their elementary teachers to request kits and/or complete the Elementary Level Kit with the younger students.

  • Participation Options

Kits will be mailed or hand-delivered after March 9 and hopefully completed by the end of April.
  • This program will take place from March through May. Teachers may complete the activities at their convenience.

Staff is currently limited. We are in the process of updating and revising our required Volunteer Reader training session options and registrations for Readers at this time. Volunteer Readers are Volunteers with agricutural backgrounds and/or agricultural connections who will read the Literacy Project book to your class virtually through a platform such as Zoom or Teams or visit your classroom in person on a day and time that you mutually agree upon. They often add an interesting and informative element to the lesson.

It is up to the teachers to connect with the Readers after being email "introduced' by CoAITC staff. Please stay tuned for updates.
