  • For over 107 years, the student voice has led Mortar Board. Mortar Board collegiate members provide valuable time and energy as leaders and volunteers for the Society. We are always looking for volunteers to serve on national teams and ensure the student voice remains at the heart of Mortar Board operations and policies. 

    Mortar Board offers short- and long-term options for student engagement on the national level. Please indicate your interest below and contact the National Office with specific questions at chapters@mortarboard.org.

  • National Leader Position Opportunities

    Opportunities that require at least a 1-year commitment and involve 1-2 meetings per month and work outside of meetings. Each of these opportunities requires an additional application or nomination and interview. Student Representatives on the National Council are elected each summer at the National Conference for a one-year term; Student Activity Board (Region Representatives) members also serve a one-year term and are elected at the National Conference. The Conference Advisory Board is selected in March of each year with a term of about six months until after the National Conference.
  • Student Representative to the Mortar Board National Council
    The National Council position is a 1-year term. Two students are elected annually at the National Conference. 

    Student Advisory Board (Region Representative to the Governance Committee)
    Mortar Board is made up of six (6) geographic regions. Each region elects one student to represent the region and serve as a liaison to the Governance Committee and the Student Representatives at-Large advocating on behalf of fellow collegiate members from the region. This is a 1-year term. One student from each region is elected annually at the National Conference. 

    Conference Advisory Board
    Each year, Mortar Board holds a National Conference—our flagship initiative. The Conference Advisory Board assists in the planning and execution of the national conference. 

  • Committee Opportunities

    Standing Committees request at least a 1-year commitment, with the opportunity for continued engagement; committees meet once a month and may have additional work outside of meetings. Ad hoc committees are typically shorter in terms, from a few weeks to up to a 1-year commitment.
  • Standing Committees

    Standing committees are appointed by either the National President or the Foundation President and are typically 2-year terms. Please select any / all committees of interest.

    Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEI&B): Members guide the society to enhance a sense of belonging and focus on our equity portion of our mission.

    Governance: Members are responsible for reviewing Bylaws and proposed Bylaws changes and make recommendations on an annual basis.

    Standing Nominations: Members are responsible for recruiting and promoting National Council opportunities and make recommendations for the annual slate of candidates.

  • Ad Hoc Committees

    Ad hoc committees are appointed by either the National President, the Foundation President, or the Executive Director and are typically for terms no longer than one year. Please select any / all committees of interest.

     

    Awards Selection Committee: Members read and review nominations / submissions for annual alumni, collegiate, and chapter awards.

    Career Connections Committee: In 2024, Mortar Board launched "Career Connections," an initiative geared towards collegiate and young alumni. We are looking for alumni to help coordinate career and professional development opportunities. 

    Membership Committee: Members assist in enhancing, promoting, and sustaining membership including expanding Mortar Board to new chapters and helping to reactivate dormant chapters.

    National Conference Planning Committee: The Mortar Board National Conference, held virtually in odd-years and in-person in even years, seeks the input and assistance of alumni to create the best conference experience for our attendees and keep our flagship initiative thriving.

    Student Teller at Special National Conference (SNC): Student Tellers serve as the official group that tallies the votes and validates election results.

  • Mortar Board Ambassadors

    **NEW THIS YEAR** Mortar Board Ambassadors are a group of students who provide ideas and feedback about programs, policies, and initiatives that impact the collegiate experience. Meetings are convened about once every 1-2 months on a variety of topics. Mortar Board Ambassadors will have the opportunity to connect with other students and be the first to hear updates and news. Ambassadors become both a sounding board and idea generator, having the ear of the National President, the Executive Director, the Director of Collegiate success, and other National Leaders. Ambassadors attend and offer feedback and insight, but do not have additional work outside of meetings.
