The history of significant ideologies and intellectual movements (-isms and -ologies) that influence our individual and collective realities as Ummah.
• A brief overview of Western civilization's history before and after the Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment periods to understand its origins and relevance to us.
• The shift of power from the church to the nation-state and the creation of the category of “religion.”
• The beliefs (Aqeedah) and foundations (Usul) of secularism, philosophical liberalism (including its various forms), conservatism, socialism, Marxism, feminism, and the red-pill movement (toxic masculinity), compared to the Islamic framework.
• Hallaqian Orientalism (different from Said’s project) is a project of modernity and its impact on contemporary knowledge.
This course has been designed from a Quran-centered perspective. Although taking only the philosophical or historical route is easy, we will strive to stay focused on negotiating these ideologies from an Islamic paradigm based on our epistemology.
Additionally, we believe that we need to know what we love more than what we hate. We need to have a strong knowledge about Allah to love Him while recognizing these man-made isms and ologies. Therefore, all this critique of modern “isms” should be balanced with a discourse centered on Tazkiyah (spirituality), as we need to emotionally attach to Allah while learning about the negative aspects of the forces that divert us from Him.
