Foster Pet Handling and Training
At Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS), our mission is to sustainably and respectfully serve pets and the people who love them with compassionate, comprehensive, and exemplary care. As fosters at the LTBHS, we expect that you will treat every animal with kindness. LTBHS does not allow the use of force or aversive training methods or tools, including but not limited to dominance training and/or electric, prong, or choke collars. Any foster dog should be always kept on a leash or in a fence while outside and will not be allowed at public dog parks, daycare centers, or boarding facilities. LTBHS foster cats must be kept indoors as well.
Foster Supplies
LTBHS agrees to provide all necessary supplies to foster families upon request including and not limited to food, treats, medications, crates, blankets, toys, etc. LTBHS will not reimburse or replace supplies purchased or used by the foster without prior approval from LTBHS staff.
Veterinary Care
All veterinary care, preventative or emergency shall be provided only by the Shelter and Community Medicine Veterinarian, or another approved by the same. Foster parents are responsible for ensuring foster pets are present for any scheduled appointments and that appointments are rescheduled within a timely fashion if necessary. Foster parents accept the responsibility of ensuring every foster pet maintains appropriate food, water, shelter, and medical care to keep them in a state of good health. Foster parents must report any concerns they may have with a foster pet as soon as they are recognized to ensure expedient care can be provided.
Report of Incidents
LTBHS requires that any incident or injury which occurs with an LTBHS foster animal be reported to a staff member immediately. This is to protect your safety and the safety of others as well as to ensure compliance with all State laws and applies to circumstances of injury or illness to foster pets or because of the behavior of a foster pet.
Adoption
LTBHS cannot guarantee the adoption of any pet while being fostered. LTBHS foster parents are subject to the same adoption procedures and policies as another and adoption fees are not automatically waived for those who foster. Foster pets are considered the legal property of LTBHS until adoption is approved and completed. Any decisions as it relates to a foster animal’s care, feeding, training practices, or placement is at the discretion of LTBHS, and any changes are to be approved by LTBHS employees regardless of the intended outcome for the pet.
