1. Create 3 to 5 original artworks using direct observation. Direct observational work can take many forms. Some examples are: Still lives, self portraits, plein air drawings & paintings, blind contours, shading studies, markmaking studies, color studies, and figure drawing. You may find examples of these on our website.

2. Create 3 to 5 original artworks using your own style and technique. When creating these works, please consider your concept or theme.

* The chosen Medium is entirely up to what is accessible to you, but CAM recommends the following Mediums: Charcoal, Conte, Ink Wash, Watercolor, Acrylic paint, Colored Pencil, and Graphite.

3. Document your 6 to 10 pieces with high quality photos. When taking high quality photos, ensure that you have bright and even lighting that does not cast shadows on your work. Ensure that the photos of your work are not angled. Instead they should be straight-on and centered in the frame. Modern phones have the capability of taking high quality photos. When uploading your artwork to the computer, check to see that it is uploaded with the highest quality settings possible.

CAM Fellows are required to participate in Registration Day (March 22nd, 2025), Fellowship Readiness Classes (April 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd), and Orientation Day (May 3rd, 2025).*

Mobile phone usage will be limited to promote immersion into the summer program and minimize distractions during the Memphis-based program. Cell phones will, generally, only be used at designated times that range from 30 minutes to 1 hour a day; there are exceptions for memory-making and research. Cell phones will be turned in at the beginning of the program and checked out for personal use during daily free time. (Trust us: you'll be having so much fun you won't miss it!) Contact with family or friends is recommended during this time. For safety reasons, Fellows will have their mobile phones in New York City. Parents/guardians: Please note that all CAM team members have cellular devices. Additionally, there is a dedicated CAM mobile phone available 24-7 during all parts of the program.*

21. Contemporary Arts Memphis, in Partnership with the University of Memphis, offers college credit in the form of Dual Enrollment. This is an amazing opportunity to gain college credit at no cost to our Fellows! Considering this, please note that this is a college-level program and the instructors will grade the work our Fellows produce throughout the class. At the end of the Fellowship, our fellows will receive a grade based on their performance in their respective Dual Enrollment courses. Keep in mind, that participation in Dual Enrollment is not mandatory. Electing not to participate does not bar you from participating in the Summer Fellowship. In order to be enrolled in Dual Enrollment, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and a 17 Composite score on the ACT (if you have taken the ACT). If selected as a 2025 Fellow, do you want to be enrolled in this Dual Enrollment Opportunity?
