Scholarship Disbursements
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior committed to attending a HBCU.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities and accomplishments.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who has shown outstanding commitment to community service and volunteer work.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who demonstrates exceptional scholastic performance and academic dedication.
Requirements
- 12th grade students of a Central Jersey public school system (Mercer, Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, or Monmouth county)
- Provide a copy of your unofficial high school transcript through April 1, 2025 (upload in PDF format at the appropriate point in the application)
- Must include an acceptance letter from a 2 year or 4 year college that is accredited (when made available)
- Provide two letters of recommendation
- One from a core teacher or your high school counselor
- One from a civic/church/community leader or employer
- Submit a 500-750 word essay, answering one of the the following questions (based on the desired award):
- Service Award: Describe a significant community service project or initiative you led or participated in during your high school years. How did this experience shape your understanding of community needs, influence your personal growth, and impact those you served? Additionally, explain how you plan to continue your commitment to service during your college years and beyond. Please provide specific examples and reflections throughout your response.
- Leadership Award: Tell us about a time when you had to step up as a leader in a challenging situation, whether in school, extracurricular activities, or your community. What obstacles did you face, how did you overcome them, and what did you learn about effective leadership through this experience? Include specific examples of how you motivated others, resolved conflicts, or implemented positive change. Finally, describe how you will use these leadership skills to make an impact during your college years.
- Academic Excellence Award: Beyond your GPA and test scores, describe an academic challenge or project that ignited your intellectual curiosity and demonstrated your commitment to learning. How did you approach this challenge, what research or innovative thinking did you apply, and what did the experience teach you about your academic potential? Additionally, explain how you plan to pursue academic excellence in your chosen field of study in college and how you will use your education to make meaningful contributions to your field and society.
- HBCU Scholar Award: What draws you to pursue your education at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU)? Discuss how you believe an HBCU's legacy, culture, and educational environment will uniquely prepare you for your future goals. Include specific examples of how you plan to contribute to and benefit from the HBCU experience, and how you will use your education to uplift both your chosen HBCU community and the broader African American community.
Recipients
- Must attend the celebratory event for scholarshp recipients with 1 parent/supportive adult.
- Must enter college during the summer or fall/spring semester.
- Must submit official copy of grades at the end of each semester to the GPD to verify payment to be submitted for the next semester (paid each semester until funds are expended).
