The Ka Ulana ‘Ie Maui Junior Cohort will engage up to 20 Maui County high school students in a 3-month intensive ulana ‘ie cohort. The cohort will be led by O‘ahu-based kanaka maoli cultural educators and practitioners, Kumulāʻau and Haunani Sing who will travel to Maui to deliver programming and public events at the Hui throughout the cohort. Students will learn the skill of ulana ‘ie – the art of weaving the ʻieʻie root – as they immerse themselves in the cultural significance of this art form through pule, oli, and ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i.
- There is no cost to participate. Application deadline is December 15, 2024.
- Q&A Session with Kumulāʻau and Haunani Sing via ZOOM: DEC 2, 2024 / 4P-5P. Please email kmeyer@huinoeau.com to register.
- Welcome Letter & Syllabus: https://shorturl.at/mi1S3.
This journey invites Maui County high school juniors and seniors to immerse themselves in the profound practice of ʻieʻie weaving, connecting deeply to nā akua, kūpuna, and ʻāina. Through each strand woven, students will cultivate a relationship with tradition, honoring the sacredness of this art form while engaging in personal and cultural healing.
The cohort will culminate with an educational art exhibition of students’ completed artwork; a panel discussion led by the Sings, cohort members, and invited Maui-based cultural practitioners; and publication of an in-depth educational pamphlet that will engage the community in discussions about healing humanity’s mauli ola through the proliferation and perpetuation of ancestral knowledge and indigenous lifestyles.
The curriculum requires commitment from each student to attend ALL scheduled cohort sessions (dates are listed below); as well as additional time and diligence to complete projects in between the scheduled sessions. Kumulāʻau and Haunani Sing want to honor each student's time and commitment by sharing as much ʻike as possible throughout the cohort. Please review the Ka Ulana ʻIe Maui Junior Cohort Syllabus & FAQ’s 2025 for additional information. Contact kmeyer@huinoeau.com with any questions.
