Maria Smilios will share the extraordinary stories of heroism and survival of the brave women who helped to battle tuberculosis in New York City in 1929. The Black Angels were recruited from all over the country to avert a public health crisis. They risked their lives to care for some of the city’s poorest and sickest patients. Their efforts, largely unrecognized for decades, were instrumental in the development of a cure.
Hear the remarkable story of how these angelic black nurses bravely assumed the responsibility of caring for marginalized tuberculosis patients, when others turned their backs in fear.
Maria will be accompanied by Ms. Virginia Allen, 92, a nurse, labor relations advocate and social activist, and one of the last living members of the Black Angels.
