It is customary for parents to choose a godfather and a godmother when presenting a child for Baptism. However, only one godparent is strictly required, and the maximum is two. Godparents must meet all the requirements established by Canon Law:
- Be a practicing Catholic.
- Be at least 16 years old.'
- Have been Confirmed and have already received the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church.
- If married, the godparent must be in a valid Catholic marriage.
- Cannot be the child’s mother or father.
NOTE: It is not permitted to have two men or two women as godparents. Additionally, a person from another Christian faith may serve as a Christian witness.
