  • For your current registration, how many months registration have you been given in total (including any extensions)?
  • You can apply online to VARY THE CONDITIONS ON YOUR REGISTRATION to extend your registration to a maximum total of 36 months. When you apply, you will need to pay a variation fee; we will bill you the registration fees that are payable separately.

  • Have you been offered a place in a veterinary-related course or training at the University of Melbourne (includes Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital), e.g. a residency or internship?
  • YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR: Specific Registration under section 7(1)(a) of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997.

    EVIDENCE REQUIRED: 

    • Letter from the University of Melbourne on official letterhead confirming that you have been offered a place, specifying the course or type of training, and providing the start and end dates of the course or training
    • Full curriculum outlining what you will be studying, e.g. what the internship will involve.
    • Indirect supervision formed signed by principal and secondary supervisors (download from the application process section of this page below)

  • Have you been offered a teaching or research position at the University of Melbourne?
  • YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR: Specific Registration under section 7(1)(b) of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997.

    EVIDENCE REQUIRED:

    • Letter from the University of Melbourne on official letterhead confirming that you have been offered a teaching or research position, specifying the title of the position, and providing the start and end dates of the position.

  • Have you been offered employment in Victoria by a Government department or agency, e.g. a position as an On-Plant Veterinary Officer by the Australian Government?
  • YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR: Specific Registration under section 7(1)(ba) of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997.

    EVIDENCE REQUIRED:

    • Letter from your prospective employer on official government letterhead confirming that you have been offered a government position, specifying the title of the position, and providing the start and end dates of the position.

  • Are you enrolled in one of the following qualifications and have you passed the written examinations: Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE), US Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or Canadian Certificate of Qualification (CQ)? If yes, have you also been offered a position at a veterinary practice where you can train under the direct supervision of a registered veterinary practitioner?
  • YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR: Specific Registration under section 7(1)(c) of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997.

    EVIDENCE REQUIRED:

    • Authenticated (certified) results of first stage written examinations: for the AVE this is the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) exam; for the ECFVG or CQ there are 2 exams - the Basic Clinical Sciences Exam and the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination. 
    • If you are enrolled in the ECFVG or CQ, please also arrange a VAULT basic transfer from the Veterinary Information Verifying Agency to be emailed directly to us at communications@vetboard.vic.gov.au
    • Letter from your prospective employer on official business letterhead confirming that you have been offered employment, specifying the title of the position you have been offered, providing the start and end dates of the position, and describing the support the employer will offer you to help you prepare for your final clinical exam.
    • Direct supervision form signed by your proposed principal supervisor and any secondary supervisors who will supervise you (download from the application section on this page).

    You must provide the above documents with your application.

  • Please read the policy if you wish to continue.

  • Have you been offered a position to meet an "identified need" for a veterinary practitioner with your qualifications, skillset and experience? NOTE new graduates offered internships would not be considered to have the skills and experience required to meet an identified need.
  • YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR: Specific Registration under section 7(1)(d) of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997.

    EVIDENCE REQUIRED:

    • A letter from your prospective employer on official business letterhead confirming that you have been offered employment, specifying the title of the position, and providing the start and end dates of the position.
    • Information showing that a) there is an identified need to employ you and b) you have the skills and experience to meet the identified need. See pages 4 and 5 of the Board's Identified Need Policy for a list of information and documents to supply. Some of this information can be included in the employer's letter. Some can be uploaded separately, e.g. evidence of advertising.
    • Indirect supervision form signed by both principal and secondary supervisors (download the form from the application process section of this page below).

  • Based on your answers, you are not currently eligible to apply for specific registration in Victoria.

    If you wish to be considered for registration in Victoria your options are to:

    • obtain a qualification that is recognised in Australia, e.g. a foundation veterinary degree from an accredited Australian university or a non-degree qualification such as the Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE) Certificate; the RCVS Statutory Membership Examination; or the ECFVG, PAVE or CQ programs in North America. A non-degree qualification assists overseas-qualified vets to meet the standards required to practise in Australia and New Zealand.
    • be offered employment or study that would allow you to apply for specific registration, e.g. teaching, research or study at the University of Melbourne; government position; pass non-degree qualification written exams and be offered a supervised position at a veterinary practice etc.
