To our Parents and Caregivers:
The women of the Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. would like to extend an invitation to your child to participate in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. This program is designed for young ladies 11-14 years old who are interested in developing their leadership and communication skills, and who show an interest in science, technology, math or many other non-traditional career choices.
The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is named for the outstanding and accomplished widow of Malcolm X. In addition to being a registered nurse, Dr. Shabazz earned her doctorate in higher education administration and curriculum development.
Our objectives for this program are as follows:
• Provide African American females, ages 11-14, with an opportunity to learn and share their experiences, their hopes, and their dreams for the future.
• Offer Delta Academy students the opportunity to accomplish great things together in the areas of sisterhood, scholarship, and service.
• Provide African American role models (mentors) for the girls at this critical point in their lives and offer exposure to non-traditional careers for African American women.
• Demonstrate the relevance of math, science, and technology to a participant’s future, stimulate interest in these subjects, and improve herself image as a learner of math, science, and technology, as well as other non-traditional career choices.
The activities implemented include workshops for computer training, self- esteem, and etiquette, cover letter and resume building, and artistic development. We also organize special activities that further enhance the cultural knowledge of the young women within our communities.
The Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter’s Delta Academy Program 2024-2025 program will run from October through June. We will have at least two sessions per month.
If you have any additional questions, and/or would like for your student to be considered for this rewarding experience, please complete the application below.
Sincerely,
Nydia Southerland, Chair Kenya Johnson, President
