    Position Overview: The Head Ranger for your Traditional Owner Group (Wongkumara, Kullilli, Boonthamurra, Yandruwandha Yawarrawarrka or Dieri) will lead the activities for the new Cooper Basin Ranger Program on your Traditional Owner Group's Country and, on occasions, elsewhere in the Cooper Basin in collaboration with the other Traditional Owner Groups. The Head Ranger will supervise and direct two other rangers assigned to work on your Traditional Owner Group's Country, to deliver land management and cultural heritage conservation outcomes as outlined in annual work plans developed by the Traditional Owners and managed by their administering organisation, Cooper Basin Ranger Support Services Ltd (CBRSS Depending on where the successful applicant resides and whether permanent accommodation is available near the ranger base, arrangements may be made for rostered work blocks on a Fly In Fly Out or Drive In Drive Out basis. Therefore, permanent relocation in order to take up a job will not necessarily be required.

    Commencement and training: Because this position is part of a new ranger program, the program partners have agreed that all Head Rangers and Rangers will begin their appointments by undertaking 6 months of training, to be delivered near Camooweal in northwest Queensland, from February to August 2025. Head Rangers (one for each of five Traditional Owner Groups in the program) will join the Ranger trainees in participating in the training, which will incorporate a Certificate I in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (for those who don't have it), along with other general prevocational work skills and qualifications. The training program will also involve extensive work experience and on-the-job training opportunities, working with local Aboriginal rangers and social enterprises. Head Rangers will receive a full wage during the training period, while trainee Rangers will be paid a trainee wage.

    Training components will be adapted for Head Rangers to ensure there is a value-add for them, which may include another Certificate level qualification or accredited modules during the training, possibly related to their supervisory or leadership roles. There will also be scope for the filling of any gaps in their qualifications - for example, to improve IT skills or relevant competencies or tickets. However, the main aim is to ensure all rangers are exposed to the

  • same elements of training (serving as a refresher for any head rangers who already have relevant qualifications and experience It will also foster a shared sense of purpose and understanding of work tasks and methods, while building relationships across the program.

    The training will be delivered by the Aboriginal social enterprise, Myuma, at the Dugalunji training camp near Camooweal. Myuma's award-winning program has trained over 2000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for work in civil, mining, land management and other industries in the past 20 years. There may be an opportunity to return home for leave during the trainin period, with travel costs covered by the program.

    The roster during the 26 weeks of ranger training from February to August 2025 will be a 10 day fortnight (6 days on, 1 day off, 4 days on, 3 days off The Head Rangers will be based in Camooweal, Queensland at the Dugalunji Training Camp, with periods in other locations for work placement with existing rangers. The roster during ongoing employment as a Head Ranger from August 2025 is to be determined. It is likely to be a Fly-in, Fly-out (FIFO) or Drive-in, Drive-out (DIDO) roster. Location is likely to be initially from a Santos camp facility in the Cooper Basin, then from a ranger hub on country once established.

    Meals and accommodation will be provided at no cost during the 26 weeks training. Travel from home to the training site (and return) will be provided.   • A rangers' program is being established by Native Title holders in the Cooper Basin region of central Australia, an area of some 130,000 square kilometres spanning southwest Queensland, northeast South Australia and northwest New South Wales. The program, funded by energy company, Santos Limited, for an initial five years, will assist the Traditional Owners of these lands to better care for Country, create employment pathways and protect the environment. A Head Ranger and 2 other Rangers will be recruited from each of the Traditional Owners Groups: The Boonthamurra People The Kullilli People The Wongkumara People The Yandruwandha Yawarrawarrka People The Dieri People The program will be managed by representatives of these five Groups through the board of the CBRSS company ('Board' Key Responsibilities

    Supervise and work with a team of 2 Rangers to deliver environmental and cultural heritage management and conservation outcomes, as agreed in annual work plans Ensure compliance with human resources policies and health and safety policies and procedures Provide mentoring and development for Rangers, and undertake performance planning and ongoing capacity-building for them Work with the Manager to address any concerns in relation to team member performance issues, including compliance with workplace health and safety issues Actively promote a team culture that supports and encourages resourcefulness and innovation, as well as contributing towards the improvement of processes and systems Have input to the development of annual work plans for approval by the Board Undertake day-to-day work planning, scheduling and coordination and oversee logistical arrangements for all activities Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including State and Federal Government agencies or boards/committees, local governments, pastoralists and community groups to achieve 'caring for country' outcomes Manage ranger assets, as instructed by the Manager and in accordance with program policies and procedures, ensuring equipment and assets are purchased, checked, maintained and repaired consistent with applicable budgets, policies and procedures Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and present information about the program in a way appropriate to the audience, including in a culturally appropriate way

    Contribute to the development and dissemination of educational, awareness raising and publicity materials that support effective implementation and broader promotion of the program Ensure field data collection occurs accurately and consistently, through e-tools or otherwise, and is presented in the relevant database according to protocols Work at the direction of the Manager and the Board, in accordance with protocols and processes agreed from time to time

  • Report to the Manager and the Board as required, and also to the relevant Traditional Owner Group in relation to program outcomes for Country, as required. Key Attributes and Qualifications

    Identify and recognised as belonging to the Wongkumara, Kullilli, Boonthamurra, Yandruwandha Yawarrawarrka or Dieri Traditional Owner Group Have experience working as a Ranger or a similar role, including any volunteer work, and be comfortable undertaking management activities in relation to native and/or pest flora and fauna, habitats, waterways and cultural sites Have good knowledge of the Traditional Owner Group's culture and country, or an interest in gaining such knowledge Be committed to the aims of the program, with a genuine interest in working on Country, sometimes in challenging conditions and away from home for extended periods Have a track record in managing and coordinating tasks for or within a team to achieve required outcomes, with strong organisational skills Be strongly committed to, and capable of, ensuring compliance - by yourself and your team - with all program policies and procedures, particularly regarding workplace health and safety matters Be physically fit and comfortable performing on-ground manual tasks Be willing to undertake a medical examination upfront and regular drug/alcohol testing before and during the period of appointment Have a strong work ethic and good interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively within a team Have good oral and written communication skills, with an ability to read and interpret written materials and to write reports and other communication materials Be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, from Traditional Owners to industry and government representatives Be familiar with basic IT systems including Microsoft Office, information management / databases and communication apps such as Teams or Zoom At a minimum, a C-Class, manual Drivers Licence (or eligibility to obtain) Readiness to travel frequently throughout Country and the broader Cooper Basin region, in addition to occasional travel, including by light aircraft, to attend meetings in cities or other regional locations. Desirable skills and experience Qualifications, at Certificate or higher level, in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or similar Experience in planning and operationalising land and/or cultural heritage management

    Experience in supervising a team in any field of work Experiencing working in field-based or remote teams A Queensland Government Blue Card or other State equivalent clearance to work with children (or eligibility to obtain)
