    Position Overview: You will work alongside another ranger under the direction of the Head Ranger for your Traditional Owner Group's Country delivering land management and cultural heritage conservation outcomes, as outlined in annual work plans developed by the Traditional Owners and managed by their administering organisation, Cooper Basin Ranger Support Services Ltd (CBRSS You may also be involved in activities elsewhere in the Cooper Basin in collaboration with other Traditional Owner Groups.

    Please Note: This is an identified position for an Aboriginal person from the relevant Traditional Owner Group.

    Commencement and training: Trainee Rangers will begin their appointments by undertaking 26 weeks of training, to be delivered near Camooweal in northwest Queensland, from February to August 2025. The training will incorporate a Certificate I in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (for those who don't have it), along with other general prevocational work skills and qualifications. The training program will also involve extensive work experience and on-the-job training opportunities, working with local Aboriginal rangers and social enterprises. Rangers will receive a trainee wage under the relevant Award during the training period.

    It is expected Trainee Rangers will be appointed as Rangers without a further selection process upon an assessment of suitability following the successful completion of the training. It is also expected Rangers will embark upon the training with a firm intention take up the ongoing Ranger appointment from August 2025.

  • The training will be delivered by the Aboriginal social enterprise, Myuma, at the Dugalunji training camp near Camooweal. Myuma's award-winning program has trained over 2000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for work in civil, mining, land management and other industries in the past 20 years. There may be an opportunity to return home for leave during the training period, with travel costs covered by the program.

    The roster during the 26 weeks of ranger training from February to August 2025 will be a 10 day fortnight (6 days on, 1 day off, 4 days on, 3 days off The trainees will be based in Camooweal, Queensland at the Dugalunji Training Camp, with periods in other locations for work placement with existing rangers. The roster during ongoing employment as a Ranger from August 2025 is to be determined. It is likely to be a Fly-in, Fly-out (FIFO) or Drive-in, Drive-out (DIDO) style roster. Location is likely to be initially from a Santos camp facility in the Cooper Basin, then from a ranger hub on country once established.

    Meals and accommodation will be provided at no cost during the 26 weeks training. Travel from home to the training site (and return) will be provided.   • A rangers' program is being established by Native Title holders in the Cooper Basin region of central Australia, an area of some 130,000 square kilometres spanning southwest Queensland, northeast South Australia and northwest New South Wales. The program, funded by energy company, Santos Limited, for an initial five years, will assist the Traditional Owners of these lands to better care for Country, create employment pathways and protect the environment. A Head Ranger and 2 other rangers will be recruited from each of the Traditional Owners Groups: The Boonthamurra People The Kullilli People The Wongkumara People The Yandruwandha Yawarrawarrka People The Dieri People. The program will be managed by representatives of these five Groups through the board of the CBRSS company ('Board' Key Responsibilities Please note, the technical and operational skills indicated below can be learned during the training program or on-the-job, for an applicant with the right attitude and willingness to grow. Working under the direction of the Head Ranger, willingly participate in all Ranger duties, activities and on-the-job training opportunities, e.g., operation of equipment, natural resource management tasks, biodiversity mapping, weed management, and flora and

    Working actively to promote a positive and supportive team culture, one that works with strengths, encourages resourcefulness, innovation and continuous improvement Carrying out assigned duties in an honest, fair and professional manner Capturing and entering electronic data on Global Positioning Systems (GPS), using field tablets, cameras, cultural management databases and other tools Carrying out administrative duties, following protocols and procedures, e.g., writing emails, using administrative templates and information management systems (such as work plans, activity reports, travel plans, timesheets, and sick leave applications) Taking care of work equipment, fleet, plant and camping gear, including cleaning and maintenance, as instructed Being committed to a continual journey of personal and professional development, e.g., being a willing worker, punctual and reliable, following work plans, workplace policies and procedures, and fully participating in performance development and work planning

    Key Attributes and Qualifications Identify and recognised as belonging to the one of the Wongkumara, Kullilli, Boonthamurra, Yandruwandha Yawarrawarrka or Dieri Traditional Owner Groups Have a strong interest in working on Country, sometimes in challenging conditions and away from home for extended periods Be able and willing to undertake physical labour, outdoors and in adverse weather conditions, and to handle a variety of plant and animal specimens and chemicals, within workplace health and safety guidelines

  • Be physically fit and willing to undertake a medical examination upfront and regular drug/alcohol testing before and after appointment Have a strong work ethic and an ability to work co-operatively with others in a team environment, working together to resolve problems Have reasonable oral and written English skills and be able to understand and act upon written and oral instructions and tasks, both supervised and unsupervised, in line with standard policies and procedures Be strongly committed to incorporating safety management processes into all aspects of work Have good knowledge of the culture and country of the Wongkumara, Kullilli, Boonthamurra, Yandruwandha Yawarrawarrka or Dieri, or an interest in gaining such knowledge Have good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to respectfully engage with colleagues, Traditional Owners, land managers, government agencies, local government, students and community Have, or be prepared to learn, basic computer skills, such as use of Microsoft Office (emails, word/other documents) and communication apps (Teams/Zoom), and be willing to learn to use e-tools for the collection and recording of data At a minimum, a Learners (L) drivers' licence Readiness to travel frequently throughout Country and the broader Cooper Basin region, in addition to occasional travel, including by light aircraft, to attend meetings in city or other regional locations. Desirable skills and experience Experience in natural and cultural resource management - e.g., flora and fauna identification, land management and ecology Experience working in remote or field-based teams A Certificate or other qualification in land management, conservation or similar.
