Do I need a drivers' licence to apply to be a ranger?
To perform the job as a Ranger or Head Ranger will require a manual, open driver's licence.
Applicants for the Head Ranger position will be expected to have a current driver's licence already. If the applicant's licence is suspended, the training organisation may be able to assist the applicant to reinstate the licence.
Applicants for the trainee Ranger position will be required to at least have a Learner's licence. During the 26 weeks of ranger training, an applicant with a Learner's licence will be assisted to obtain an open driver's licence (i.e. through tuition, practice and testing
Can I apply to be a ranger if I have a criminal history?
All applicants will be required to undertake a criminal history check. Previous offences will not exclude a candidate from being considered for a ranger job, but they will be taken into account in considering suitability for the job.
The ability to obtain a clearance for working with children (e.g. a Blue Card in Qld) will be highly regarded, as some Ranger activities may involve working with children (e.g. Junior Ranger program
Are there any medical requirements of the job?
Ranger work can be physically demanding and may involve working in remote locations in oppressive conditions, away from medical facilities. All candidates shortlisted following an interview will be required to undertake a pre-employment medical check. A candidate will not be appointed if they have a serious medical condition that might put them at risk while doing the job of a Ranger. Candidates will need to be suitably fit for work to carry out the job of a Ranger.
Will I need to move away from home to be a ranger?
Ranger work will require extended periods of time away from home. The initial training for the Rangers and Head Rangers from February to August 2025 will be in Camooweal (Qld) and other remote locations during work experience with other rangers. There will be a 1-week break at Easter to return home.
The ongoing work from August 2025 will be based at ranger hubs in the Cooper Basin. Rangers will reside at the hubs. A Fly-in, Fly-out or Drive-in, Drive-out roster may be possible.
