  • Thank you for your interest in employment with the Airfield 4-H Educational Center, one of six independently registered nonprofit 4-H Centers across the state of Virginia. The Airfield 4-H Center sits on 218 acres just in Wakefield, Virginia, and has welcomed youth to Junior 4-H Camp since 1981. 

    Through Junior 4-H Camp, the Airfield 4-H Center serves up to 1,664 youth each summer from our 16-county service area that includes Dinwiddie, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Prince George, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Petersburg, Surry, Sussex, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Accomack, Northampton, Greensville, and Emporia Counties. 

    The Airfield 4-H Center is proud to be an American Camp Association accredited organization.

    APPLICANT PROFILE  

    The Airfield 4-H Center summer program staff are at least 18 years old by May 1st of the summer season. A team of approximately 16 program staff help to facilitate summer camp programming from mid-May through early August, with mandatory training held in May. While not required, most applicants have completed at least one year of post-secondary education at a college/university, trade school or internship. 

    We believe that 4-H Center programs and services provide an important opportunity to positively impact our community. For that reason, a commitment to being kind, respectful, and accepting toward all participants, partners, stakeholders, and all others with which one may interact is a critical requirement for success as a summer program staff.

    Please note that the 4-H Center will assist successful applicants in acquiring specific training and/or certifications required for some staff positions.

  • What is expected of a summer camp staff member at the Airfield 4-H Educational Center?

    Working at camp is probably one of the most demanding jobs that you will ever have. However, it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences too!

    Be a positive role model and assist in all operations of camp.

    Work cooperatively with Extension Agents and Adult Volunteers to provide a safe, positive, fun, and memorable camping experience for all.

    Typically, 4-H Center summer staff have completed at least one year of college.

    Strong candidates also have work and/or volunteer experience in 4-H, teaching, and/or youth development programming.  Regardless of previous experience, successful applicants demonstrate certain personal attributes including (but not limited to):

    We believe that camp is a place for both children and staff to learn and grow.  Most summer staff have a primary program area assignment.  However, we are seeking candidates who are interested and willing to participate in other programming areas in addition to their primary role based on each weeks’ specific needs.

    The work week typically Monday through Friday and a minimum of two weekends.

    A typical week has a Monday morning start time of 7am and a Friday afternoon end time of 2pm.

    If you are unable to be present for the dates below, please strongly consider your ability to commit to working at the 4-H center this summer. Summer 2025 dates are as follows:

    • April 11-13: TALT (nonmandatory unpaid training; all lodging and meals are covered)
    • May 12-16: State Staff Training (registration fees; all certifications, lodging,    and meals are covered by the Center)
    • May 19-30: Center Staff Training
    • June 9-13: Specialty Camp
    • June 16-20: Dinwiddie Jr. Camp
    • June 23-27: Isle of Wight and Southampton Jr. Camp
    • June 30-July 4: Prince George Jr. Camp
    • July 7-11: FAB 4 Jr. Camp
    • July 14-18: Chesapeake Jr. Camp
    • July 21-25: SAGEN Jr. Camp
    • July 28-Aug 1: Virginia Beach Jr. Camp
    • August 4-8: All staff clean up

  • Camp Medic Qualifications:

    • Current Virginia Emergency Medical Technician, Registered Nurse, or other applicable certification preferred.
    • Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification from an approved certifying organization.
    • O2 Administration certification preferred
    • First Aid certification required for those who are not current Virginia EMS providers or Registered Nurse.
    • Previous experience in the provision of medical care to youth and adults.

    Knowledge:

    • Responsible for learning all 4-H emergency and safety standards, and the understanding of the American Camping Association standards as they apply to Junior 4-H Camp.

    • Responsible for learning Airfield 4-H Center’s Medical Standing Orders and the ability to follow them.

    • Responsible for learning all 4-H Center paperwork procedures related to Junior 4-H Camp, medical treatment, and emergencies.

      Responsible to:

    • Work under the supervision, guidance, evaluation, and in cooperation with the 4-H Center Program Director.

      Duties:

    • Provide medical treatment to all Junior 4-H Camp participants as needed (Staff, Extension Personnel, volunteers, and campers) during the day and night (live on-site).

    • Must respond to emergency situations in a prompt, calm manner.

    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all treatment given using American Camp Association medical record log (or approved log).

    • Monitor all Health History and Medication forms when received. Report any missing information to the Program Director and Extension Agent. (All participants must have a signed Health History form).

    • Oversee the Drake Health Center from June to August. Maintain accurate and  detailed records of Drake Health Center equipment and supplies. Develop and monitor inventory. Report any needs to the Program Director.

    • Responsible for keeping Drake Health Center clean.

    • First responder for situations involving bodily fluids (blood, urine, vomit, etc.).

    • Educate 4-H Center participants about safe, healthy behaviors during Junior 4-H Camp.

    • Work with volunteers, Extension Agents, and especially youth in ways that are cooperative, supportive, and flexible.

    • Complete other duties and projects as assigned by the Program Director and/or Staff Coordinator.

    • Be a positive role model for youth at all times.
