Overview and Expectations
The Advisory Board is responsible for:
- Short- and long-term strategic planning
- Adopting an annual budget
- Ensuring effective fiscal oversight
- Recruiting, orienting, and developing board members
- Hiring and evaluating the Executive Director.
Individual Advisory Board Members are expected to:
- Serve a 3-year term that begins and ends on the orientation date with an option to be re-elected for three additional terms
- Serve as ambassadors for HAVI
- Abide by the bylaws
- Understand and promote the mission, while being familiar with the organization’s programs, policies, and operations
- Attend and actively participate in all meetings (approximately 90 minutes in length), or appoint a representative of their program or organization to attend the call in their place
- Actively engage in at least one committee meeting and/or workgroup (roughly 1-3 hours/month, as determined by the committee)
- Voluntarily take on special assignments
- Support the fundraising and resource development efforts through an annual contribution (commensurate to their personal circumstances)
- Do their part to ensure 100% board giving
- Participate in fundraising activities and events
- Leverage their personal and/or professional networks and resources to ensure financial and reputational success.
- Actively participate in the annual conference (3-4 days) and attend special events, such as board retreats, as scheduled
- Attend a new member orientation (typically 60-90 minutes in duration)
- Help identify, cultivate, and meet with potential donors and/or community leaders to advocate for the HAVI’s mission and build the case for support throughout their term.
The Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm EST at least 10 times per year on Zoom unless otherwise stated.

We plan to interview applicants in February 2025, and will schedule a new Advisory Board Orientation session in April 2025.
