DefendHER is a supportive self-defence and personal safety programme for women in Bala and surrounding areas. The sessions are designed for female partners such as mothers and daughters, sisters, aunts and nieces, grandmothers and granddaughters, and friends, who want to build confidence, awareness, and practical skills together.
Delivered by experienced instructors from Alpha Unit Training, DefendHER focuses on simple, effective and memorable techniques to help women of all ages and abilities feel more confident, more aware, and better prepared to escape danger and respond calmly and effectively to threatening situations — no fitness or previous experience required. Open to women and girls aged 12 and over, of all ages and abilities.
You will learn how to:
- Become more aware of potential risks and how to manage them effectively.
- Improve their ability to spot and avoid danger before situations escalate.
- Gain confidence in setting boundaries and using their voice to deter aggression.
- Learn practical, easy-to-use self-defence skills, with each technique focusing on one clear, memorable action per situation.
- Develop instinctive responses through regular practice — similar to first aid skills that are rarely used but easily recalled when needed.
This project is about empowerment, not fear. It aims to restore a sense of safety and control for local women, teaching them skills to avoid, deter, or escape dangerous situations. It will also prepare young women for life beyond Bala, whether at college, university, or work, by giving them practical tools for self-protection. It is every mother's wish for our daughters to go out into the world equipped with the skills they need to keep themselves safe.
