Comfort Paws Quality of Life Calculator
  • Comfort Paws Quality of Life Calculator

  • This Quality of Life (QOL) Calculator was created by Dr. Katrina Spies to help pet owners assess their pet’s comfort, happiness, and well-being across multiple key areas. It is especially useful for pets with chronic conditions, terminal illnesses, or those nearing the end of their lives.

The evaluation consists of 24 questions divided into five categories:
       - Pain (weighted higher, as pain is linked to both physical and emotional suffering)
       - Mobility
       - Nutrition, Appetite, and Hydration
       - Emotional and Social Well-being
       - Human-Animal Bond and Owner Well-being

At the conclusion, you will receive individual category scores, an overall QOL score, and guidelines for interpreting the results.

These insights can serve as a baseline, guide family discussions, and support compassionate decision-making for your pet’s care. Whether your pet’s results indicate they are thriving or highlight areas of concern, this tool empowers you to make informed choices that prioritize both your pet’s well-being and your own.
  • Pain

    Interpretation

    >134

    Excellent QOL

Your pet’s quality of life is excellent. They are physically comfortable, emotionally content, and maintain a strong bond with you. No significant concerns are present. Routine annual or semi-annual veterinary check-ups are recommended to sustain their well-being.

    120–134

    Good QOL

Your pet’s quality of life is good. Minor health issues may be present, but they remain comfortable and functional. Regular veterinary visits should be maintained to monitor their condition and address any emerging concerns, though no immediate intervention is needed.

    105–119

    Acceptable QOL

Your pet’s quality of life is acceptable, but there are areas of concern. Signs of discomfort, distress, or health issues may require attention. With proper veterinary care, these issues may be managed or improved. More frequent veterinary check-ups are recommended.

    83–104

    Questionable QOL

Your pet’s quality of life is likely questionable. Noticeable signs of discomfort or distress suggest that medical attention is needed. The bond between you and your pet may also feel strained. Immediate veterinary intervention is recommended to assess options for improving their well-being.

    <83

    Poor QOL

Your pet’s quality of life is significantly compromised, with health issues causing distress and discomfort. The human-animal bond may be severely affected. Immediate veterinary intervention is essential to discuss comfort care, hospice, or humane euthanasia to prevent further suffering.

  • Final Thoughts

  •

As you assess your pet’s quality of life, remember that no score or tool can replace the personal judgment, love, and compassion you bring to this decision.

A low score in any category may indicate it’s time to consider next steps, but this should always be based on your pet’s unique circumstances and your understanding of their well-being. For example, a pet experiencing unmanageable pain despite treatment or struggling to breathe comfortably may require a deeper discussion about their future.

Every pet, family, and situation is unique. We encourage you to consider not only your pet’s individual personality, needs, and preferences but also your family's physical, emotional, time, and financial realities when making these difficult choices. Use this survey as a starting point to reflect on your pet's well-being, and don’t hesitate to bring any concerns to your veterinarian.
