Candidate Statement:
Some may see Central Co-op as just “another grocery store.” However, I recognize that it’s more than that. Central Co-op is a community space, it supports and empowers local farmers and small businesses, and it’s proof of a community-focused food system in action. I’m running for the Board and Nominating Committee because I believe in the power of our co-op and that I can contribute to our continued progress and long-term sustainability.
Seattle has been my home for over a year now and I’ve been an owner since my first weekend here. I am originally from Chicago and most recently moved from Minneapolis where I served on the board of Seward Community Co-op for 3 years. During my board tenure I supported the Co-op through numerous events like the hiring of a new GM/CEO, completing the sale of an admin building, successfully negotiating a union contract renewal, a store remodel, and increasing sales & improving our financial position. In my day job, I work with the YMCA of Greater Seattle; overseeing a suite of food access programs across King County.
I’ve called many places home. But despite all my moving around, I’ve always been committed to supporting movements and spaces that center community and put the power back into the hands of the people. I believe that Central Co-op is one of those spaces. It would be an honor to serve on your board so that we can build a stronger, community food system here in the Puget Sound, together.
