In this 2 session workshop, you’ll learn the basics of how to make scratch animations on 16mm film!

Direct animation is the broad term used to describe manipulating film without the use of a camera. This can refer to hand-painting, adhering objects, cyanotype, or any form of directly manipulating film to make images without use of a camera. In this workshop we’ll focus on ‘scratch’ animation, that is, scratching away parts of the black emulsion to make your images. We’ll go over some basic tools and techniques for creating these images, learn how to splice film, and finally project your work.

In addition to projecting your final project, your scratch films will be professionally digitized by Lightpress studios here in Seattle. A digital copy of your film will be made available to you after the workshop.

All workshops have a suggested registration fee of $100, however we do offer a sliding scale, pay-what-you-can model for those who need that option.
