Before completing this form, please apply for the SCONUL Access scheme on the SCONUL website: https://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access. Your home institution library will need to check your application. Please wait until they send you an acceptance email before completing this form.

If you are a UK University student who is not eligible for SCONUL Access you may be eligible for our Independent Researcher membership. Return to the first question and select Independent Researcher from the drop-down list.

Please note:

SCONUL Bands A, B and C:

• Can borrow up to 6 items 
• There is no access to the library computers or online resources
• Eduroam and Visitor Wi-Fi is available

SCONUL Band R:

• Membership is reference only (this means you can use books while you are in the library but you cannot borrow them)
• There is no access to the library computers or online resources
• During term-time, access to Mile End Library is restricted to 6pm to midnight on weekdays and 8am to midnight on weekends
• Eduroam and Visitor Wi-Fi is available.

• You will need to demonstrate a genuine research need in your application
• Independent Researcher membership is reference only (this means you can use books while you are in the library, but you cannot borrow them)

• Visitor Wi-Fi is available. 

In order for your application to be evaluated, please list the items from our print collection that you require access to for your research. We are not able to provide membership on request for study space alone. 

Please note we are unable to provide access to online resources.

Period of membership

Please note that the maximum length granted for Independent Researcher access is 3 months. The length of your membership will be decided based on the library's activity during the chosen period and the quantity of resources you require access to.

If you have a newer ID card your HID number is located on the front, in the bottom right hand corner.

If you have an older ID card your HID number is the first set of numbers from the long number on the back of your card.

If based at Department W or Charterhouse Square, please choose Mile End for your home library

Library membership for ULIP staff teaching Queen Mary courses.

You will need a library barcode number to complete this application form. If you do not have a Queen Mary ID card you will need to contact the Security Team to request a library barcode number on mile-end-security@qmul.ac.uk.

If you are eligible for the SCONUL Access scheme, please return to the start of this form and select SCONUL Access Scheme as this can provide a longer membership period.

This form is for refugees and people seeking asylum to self-refer for membership at Queen Mary Libraries.

If you are applying through a referral from a community partner, please use the referral form instead. This means we won't require additional evidence that you are eligible for the membership.

As a university library, we offer focused spaces for study, learning, research or revision, use of a range of academic books in the print collection, and access to visitor WiFi.

Unfortunately we cannot admit children or provide computer access. At present use of the books is reference-only, meaning you can use them in the library but you cannot borrow them.

This membership is designed to supplement the services of our local public library, Whitechapel Idea Store, which provides books to read for leisure, computers, social clubs and space for children and families.

After submitting your application form a member of library staff will process it and you will receive an email confirming the outcome.
