This division of a scale contest is focused on the competitor’s flying skills because as a typical newbee they would not be expected to have developed exceptional building and replication skills.
At this level what they have developed is assembly and flight skills. Whether you started flying a scale model yesterday or have flown for twenty years...Pro-Am has a class for you!
These classes originated with Frank Tiano. Frank’s intention was to expand competition opportunities for new scale modelers ("newbees") without forcing them to compete amidst scale modelers with years and years of construction / building, and replication experience.
“Newbees” earned their flying wings but must be nurtured along to develop their construction / building, & documentation gathering & replication skills through what Frank intended as a mentoring process.
The intent of Pro-Am is to provide an RC scale event which is, and is to remain, simple in concept. There are two (2) divisions of RC Pro-Am.
A. Pro-Am Sportsman Division is for the novice contestant only. This is.purely an ENTRY LEVEL division for RC scale competition.
B. Pro-Am Pro Division is open to any contestant with previous RC scale contest competition experience. There are two (2) Divisions within Pro-Am Pro.
B1. Pro-Am Pro Division 1: For aircraft where the prototype that’s been modeled has fixed gear, has no more than one mechanical option or not designed specifically for racing. (Basically, fabric covered).
B2. Pro-Am Pro Division 2: For aircraft where the prototype that’s been modeled has retracting landing gear, has more than one mechanical option, or designed specifically for racing. (Basically, metal skinned).
C. Eligibility: Contest is open to modeler-built/assembled & factory-built/assembled RC scale models. There is no minimum size. The maximum weight and power limits are set by the Academy of Model Aeronautics Competition Regulations | RC Fixed Wing Scale 17.
D. Power: Displacement limits are same as for RC Sport scale General Rules. Rule 4 (builder–flier) will not apply in this event. (With advance notice, the event may be conducted in different classes based on skill or age level, i.e., Open, Entry, Junior, Senior, etc.).
E. Static Judging: Static score will be zero (0) or five (5). Five (5) static points will be awarded to contestants who show documentation of outline & color resembling either the subject aircraft, or similar aircraft of the era. Published 3-views, with or without color/markings, or box top renditions are acceptable for documentation. Color and markings documentation do not have to be specific to model presented. That is all that is required to receive the 5 static points.
F. Flying: All rules as per RC Sport Scale (event 512) except contestant may use only one (1) mechanical option for scoring.
G. Scoring: Contestant’s score shall be the average of the best two (2) flight scores plus five (5) static points, if earned.
