    Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Training

  • Course Duration: 30 minutes

Burnt Mountain LLC. Learning Management System (BMLMS)

  •  - -
  • 1. Introduction to Bloodborne Pathogens (BBPs)

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Understand what bloodborne pathogens are.
    • Recognize the significance of BBP training in the construction industry.

    Lesson Content:

    • What Are Bloodborne Pathogens?
Bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are infectious microorganisms present in human blood that can cause diseases in humans. The most concerning BBPs in construction settings include:
      • Hepatitis B (HBV): Affects the liver and can lead to serious complications.
      • Hepatitis C (HCV): Also affects the liver and can cause chronic illness.
      • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): Weakens the immune system and can lead to AIDS.
    • Why BBP Training Matters for Construction Workers
While construction sites aren’t typically high-risk environments for BBPs, incidents can occur, especially when dealing with injuries, handling sharp tools, or cleaning up debris.
  • 2. Understanding OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Gain familiarity with OSHA’s BBP Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030).
    • Learn about employer and employee responsibilities.

    Lesson Content:

    • Overview of the OSHA Standard
OSHA’s BBP Standard mandates that employers protect employees who could be exposed to blood and OPIM (other potentially infectious materials). This includes implementing an Exposure Control Plan, providing PPE, and offering medical evaluation after any exposure incident.
    • Responsibilities Under OSHA
      • Employers: Must develop and maintain an Exposure Control Plan, provide adequate PPE, and ensure that training and medical services are available.
      • Employees: Should follow safe work practices, report exposures, and utilize PPE as instructed.
  • 3. Routes of Transmission

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Identify how BBPs can be transmitted in a construction setting.
    • Recognize high-risk situations and materials on site.

    Lesson Content:

    • Transmission Methods
      BBPs can be transmitted through:
      • Needlestick injuries or cuts from sharp objects.
      • Contact with contaminated surfaces or materials, like used needles, blades, or debris.
      • Entry through broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth).
      • Contact with bloodborne pathogens of other workers through contact.
    • Common Sources of Exposure
      • Handling sharp objects.
      • Cleaning public or contaminated areas.
      • Providing first aid for injuries on-site.
  • 4. Exposure Control Plan (ECP)

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Understand the components of an ECP and its importance.
    • Know where to find the company’s ECP.

    Lesson Content:

    • What Is an Exposure Control Plan?
The ECP outlines the measures the company takes to protect workers from BBP exposure. Key elements include:
      • Exposure Determination: Identifies job roles at risk of exposure.
      • Control Methods: Lists work practices and PPE requirements.
      • Post-Exposure Evaluation: Outlines steps to take if exposure occurs.
    • Where to Find the ECP
      • The ECP can be found in the company Bloodborne Pathogens Procedure located in the online safety support center.
  • 5. Universal Precautions and Work Practice Controls

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Learn the principles of universal precautions.
    • Understand safe work practices specific to construction sites.

    Lesson Content:

    • Universal Precautions
Treat all blood and OPIM as if they are infected. This approach reduces risks by ensuring that everyone follows the same safety practices.
    • Work Practice Controls
      • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after any possible exposure.
      • Handling Sharps: Place used needles, blades, or sharp objects in designated sharps disposal containers.
      • Restricted Areas: Do not eat, drink, or apply cosmetics in areas where exposure is possible.
      • Clean and Disinfect: Tools, surfaces, and equipment that may have been exposed to BBPs should be cleaned thoroughly.
      • First Aid:  Designated employees are trained to render first aid and basic life support. Rendering first aid or basic life support is optional and will expose employees to bloodborne pathogens.
      • Procedures: Employee first aid providers are required to follow the BBP Procedure located in the Procedures tab located at: www.bms.support/procedures.
  • 6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Identify types of PPE used for BBP protection.
    • Learn proper use and disposal of PPE.

    Lesson Content:

    • Types of PPE
Gloves, goggles, face shields, masks, and aprons.
    • How to Use PPE Properly
      • Don gloves before handling sharp objects or potential blood exposure.
      • Wear face shields if there’s a risk of splashing blood or OPIM.
      • Dispose of used PPE safely to prevent contamination.
    • When to Use PPE
PPE should be used whenever there is a risk of contact with blood or OPIM.
  • 7. Procedures for Accidental Exposure

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Learn the steps to take if exposed to blood or OPIM.
    • Understand the importance of immediate reporting.
    • All body fluids are considered exposure sources.

    Lesson Content:

    • Steps After Exposure
      • Wash: Clean the affected area with soap and water immediately.
      • Flush: Rinse exposed mucous membranes with water.
      • Report: Notify a supervisor right away.
      • Seek Medical Attention: Get evaluated for any potential risks and start any necessary post-exposure treatment.
    • Follow-Up
      • Employees may undergo medical evaluation and testing to prevent BBP infection.
  • 8. Hepatitis B Vaccination Program

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Learn about the Hepatitis B vaccine and the company’s vaccination program.

    Lesson Content:

    • The Vaccine
The Hepatitis B vaccine is a series of shots that protects against HBV.
    • Employer Program
The company offers the vaccine at no cost to employees at risk. If you choose not to get vaccinated, you’ll need to sign a declination form, but you can change your mind at any time.
