  • Accessibility and Application Support

  • Important Information: Estimated Time to Read, 2 Mins

We understand that the processes in the Show + Sale program create barriers to access; and are centered around colonial and Western methodologies of being and interacting with artists as an organization. In recognition of these barriers, the program is committed to working with our artists to provide accommodations that suit their abilities and situations.

The program also recognizes that, at this time, due to limitations with our operating budget; we are unable to provide specialized accommodations or directly pay for external support persons for students. We also acknowledge that our staff may not have the skills to fully support all artists’ needs, however, we are able to provide the supports outlined below:

    • Students may submit their artist statement orally via this form
    • We will work one-on-one with Artists who experience barriers; and will do our best to give support over email, in person, or through audio and video platforms (Microsoft Teams) to develop accommodations that suit their abilities and situations.
    • The Show + Sale Manager and Coordinator are hosting open office hours on the following days and times. During these times, students will be able to come into the Students' Association office (located in the Main Mall) to ask questions about the application.

  • How Can We Support You?

  • The following info is collected so that the Show + Sale team can support accepted applicants to the best of our ability and provide personal mentorship based on your needs. This section will NOT be seen by the Assessment Panel and will not affect the assessment or standing of your application.

  • Please describe your experience with the skills listed below, and some areas you want to improve on for each skill. You do not have to answer with detailed, full sentences or answer every question. Your answer can be in shorthand, point form or a basic summary.

  • Are you interested in selling artwork with or depicting any of the themes below? We ask this question so our team has a better understanding of what you want to sell and/or make. During one-on-one meetings with the Show + Sale coordinator, we will work with you so you can sell these works at our market, which is rated for all ages. Our goal is to put your work in the market, and not to censor work involving these themes.

While Show + Sale is very flexible with the work allowed to be sold at the Winter Market, we do have a some hard rules that we cannot be flexible with. These are:

    - At this time, Show + Sale does not qualify for a legal retail cannabis license, therefore all cannabis accessories such as pipes and bongs cannot be sold at the Winter Market. There are shops and dispensaries in Calgary that partner with artists to sell their work, such as FivePoint Cannabis that we encourage you to look into instead https://fivepointcannabis.ca/exhibit-with-us/

    - We do not allow works that use any racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, ableist slurs, imagery and hate speech. Including in the case of an artist using them in a reclamatory manner.

  • Important Information

Estimated Time to Read: 3 Mins

Please refer to the Application Considerations and Evaluation Criteria section of this form for more information on how the Assessment Panel will be evaluating your Artwork Images.

The artwork you submit for this application does not have to be what you sell at Show + Sale! You may revise your inventory before the Sale begins. While we prefer to see artwork that is ready for sale, the Assessment Panel is happy to view work that has been created for class, has already been sold, or is a finished prototype of a new line of products.

There is NO expectation that students create a new set of artwork during the program. Our team will work with you to refine and adapt your existing art pieces for the Winter Market.

  • Please avoid the following:

    1) Fanart of photographs, celebrities, and characters you do not have copyright permission to. If you do submit fanart, ensure that you are actively referencing your inspiration and that your artwork is stylistically different enough from the original.

    2) Technical exercises. Consider only submitting work that is finished and showcases your personal style, and not just a technical exercise.

    3) Unfinished work. Other than prototypes, we want to see polished work you are proud of!

    4) AI generated artwork. Show and Sale will not be accepting any art generated partially or fully by AI systems.

  • Please attach 3-5 images of your artwork here with the following naming format:

    image#_student ID #_initials

EG. Juli Song would be 1_000012345_JS.jpg.
